LNBS: Bob Sutton is saving the best for last.

Look back at each of his years here in KC. He pretty much brings the heat half the year with exotic blitzes and then when teams adjust, he drops everyone in coverage. Since he’s been here, he seems to go on 6-8 game stretches of utilizing one of the 2 strategies and switches it up.

I’m betting that sometime in the next 2-3 games, he’s gonna switch things up and stop dropping guys in coverage as much and starts bringing the heat again.

Getting Nelson and possibly Hali back in the rotation as well as the ongoing development of KPass, Murray, Ford and Jones should help the old man dial it up a notch.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if he calls the MNF game differently than any game thus far...we’ll see.see

I only have my phone, but I’ll spend a little time and list the game by game sack totals since he’s gotten here to see how pronounced my observation is, statistically.

I’m dead serious.

Every year since he’s been here, the defense has been streaky with sacks in spurts of 6-9 games in a row and the rest of the year get very few.

The difference is the aggressiveness of the calls.

Just watch.

I don't think the streakiness has nearly as much to do with bringing pressure as you'd like to believe. This defense has gone through streaks. Most of our problem streaks are due to personnel issues, usually at CB. In 2013, it was Marcus Cooper. In 2014, it was adjusting to losing DJ and Berry early on. In 2015, it was Jamel Fleming filling in for a suspended Sean Smith. Last year, it was a buttload of injuries... when Ramik and Terrance Smith were our ILBs, we fell off the Earth. I think his issues right now have a lot more to do with our ability to defend the jumpball than it is pressure.

Over time, Sutton has made a lot more adjustments than is given credit for. After year 1, he switched from a traditional Ryan 2-gap and went after DL passrushers. He went after quicker pass rushers. He started putting even less pressure than he did the earlier years to match the quick hit, spread offense. I think he has another adjustment coming, we just have to see what that is. I doubt it will be blitzing as he's already said blitzing doesn't work in this league.

If that is indeed the strategy...it would be epic. Save your shit for the last half...

It's not actually that crazy....just kind of. I would definitely approve of that kind of insane thinking...next level.

It's not a strategy. The numbers he posted are indeed interesting, but that's not how defensive game-planning works.

God damn, imagine this D getting 9 sacks in a game when they've barely even been pressuring the QB lately.

I hope this theory bears out this season!!

Please don't compare this defense to actual dominant units. Sheesh.

Just because the last 4 years were wasted by the offense doesn’t mean we can’t look at if Sutton’s defense gets better as the season wears on.
