Guys,
I watched this game intently and saw our running game consistently get stuffed. Then we would switch to passing game, and guess what? We moved the chains, only to be stalled again when we went back to the run. Last year I remember watching the games and seeing the same developments, we'd flounder all day and then we'd go to air and BOOM, 7 points. My question is, Why can't Gun & Co see this? I mean I'm just an average joe but it's as plain as the nose on my face. We have NO running game. I don't know if it's the backs, the blocking schemes, or what, but the bottom line is, we're not moving the ball on the ground. But yet, he's determined come hell or high water to run, run, run. WHY GUN WHY? ------------------ Gary [This message has been edited by gh4chiefs (edited 09-10-2000).] |

What the coaching staff is forgetting is that a good passing game helps with the running game, and vice versa. They complement each other.

Because that is the team he dreams of. Hopefully, if we continue, he can have plenty of time to dream next year. And I would bet, not ONE of the coordinators get a job.

i agree. the only time we get a decent run is after we've passed the ball effectively. grbac is not near as bad as some people make him out to be, but he still makes stupid mistakes. but he is getting a lot better. i only noticed a few bad throws today. and the dropped balls went way down. i don't remember any. that sure helped us out. we need a new kicker and a new punter. saurbran (sp) looked good in preseason but has sucked in both games. cut them both.

The sad part is that it looks like we have a pretty good team, except for the running game. And that's what Gun wants to use.

Aside from play caling the biggest reason the run game sucks is the SitCom. Until a feature back is established, the ground game will suffer. The Chiefs' defense bottled up Geroge all day, until that last run. This is what a good RB does. The Chiefs will never find a good RB until they give someone, anyone a chance to carry the load.

Our last two opponents had a gameplan: stuff the run & force us to beat them through the air. Apparently, it's a damn good plan... 0-2, 28 points scored.
We were successful in the air both games (though Elvis made one bad throw vs Indy). Our coaching staff is either afraid Elvis will screw up & lose the games (i.e., they are totally lacking in confidence), or they are just plain stupid (i.e., onable to see the obvious - PASS against 8-man fronts!). There is also the minute possibility that they actually think our committee & OL are good enough to run over 8 man fronts (of course, this would fall into the realm of stupidity again... so this one might be redundant). |

HC,
Do you think they're really that stupid or do they just have a inordinate amount of faith in our RB's? I mean I have never played the game at any level, my X & O knowledge is limited, most of you could run cirles around me, but it is so painfully obvious to me that our running game is a total joke but we can move the chains by throwing the ball. I just don't see why Gun and Co can't see this. I know you can't pass every down, but right now it's all we've got. And if we'd keep passing, I belive eventually those running lanes would open up. ------------------ Gary |

I want to say that I don't think anyone could be that stupid... but with what I see...
Maybe Stubborn is more correct. Or Stubbornly stupid... Actually, I'd say that a lot of it has to do with the old school attitude: Passing games make mistakes and we can't win if we make mistakes. Yeah, it will make mistakes... But hey, I'd happily take 15 interceptions and a few fumbles a season if it also equates into 25+ TD's and defenses playing back so the running backs actually have a chance to run... Football has evolved... It's become survival of the fittess and it's quite obvious that the fittest doesn't include the dino's without the wings... ------------------ Lightening Crashes... and i am there... |

This is just Gun trying to win some kind of machismo war. It's a 'Our big guys can beat up your big guys' mentality.
Smashmouth is a dead end but Gun/Raye cling to it like a warm blanket. Until Gun and the Stooges are out and take smashmouth with them, get used to it. |
