Roger Goodell's latest acid trip: a team in London
He is trying hard to replace Bud Selig as the craziest man in pro sports. And Clark weighs in at the end:
Hype Machine in Overdrive, N.F.L. Pops Back to London The Jacksonville Jaguars have committed to play a game here each of the next four seasons, giving rise to talk that they or another team will one day move to London and become the N.F.L.’s first franchise overseas. “We are going to be aggressive because we see the fans’ reactions to football and we want to be there on a more regular basis,” N.F.L. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in May. “Roger has a vision for a permanent team in London, but he’s one of the very few that does,” said Marc Ganis, the president of SportsCorp, a sports advisory company that works with N.F.L. teams. “Commissioners get pie-eyed about international. What he got was an agreement to put on two games, maybe three, but he didn’t get a timeline” to establish a team in London. Goodell has said that he hopes to turn the N.F.L. into a $25 billion business by 2027, from $10 billion now. To do that, the league would need fresh sources of income, including from overseas. “Certainly, the league has grown substantially here in the United States and continues to do so,” said Clark Hunt, the chairman of the Kansas City Chiefs and the head of the league’s international committee. “But at some point, to keep that growth rate up, the international opportunity for the league is very important.” http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/09/29...to-london.html |

Do I like the idea? Not particularly.
But it's stupid to argue that a UK team wouldn't be a success. They'd make money hand over fist. |

I don't see that there is anything wrong with wanting to put a team in London. However, the league isn't ready yet and neither is London. Maybe in 10 years or so as they get more exposure to it.

London schmondon. The NFL needs to get over this and move on. They tried the NFLE and it didn't work. Now stop messing with it and lets move on.

I don't think there is any established interest in europe -- as mentioned the NFLE is defunct. more than this, how many more teams can the NFL support? I mean, do you have any idea what it would look like have a bunch of 2nd teamers playing our guys? The NFL barely has enough personnel as is. In fact, I'd like to see it cut 2 teams so I can see better quality football.

Teams playing in London would be at a vast competitive disadvantage. Look how hard it is for teams to make the trip from coast to coast and that is just 3 time zones. It would be many times that difficult going 5-8 time zones difference.

They do that regularly to make sure the games are shown locally here in the states. Wembley has a capacity of 90,000. That's 5000 more than FedEx in Washington.

If this happens eventually and the whole NFL international keeps growing, and an NFL team ever, ever, ever was placed in Australia (even though it would be very fat down the road from now), it'd be so weird with my team being thousands of miles away, but my NOW local team being so close.
As for the fans in England, I would feel sorry for the ones that are already fans of another team that's based in the USA. It'd actually he kinda annoying to suddenly have a local team you can't support. |

It's doable - the team would need a facility in the USA (east coast I guess) and you'd want to fly there on the Tuesday after the game in london. Then you'd want to fly back to London pretty soon after the game in the USA.
London to NY is not an awful lot worse than NY - LA. It would be a competitive disadvantage for sure but stuff like that already exists. The Broncos play at 1600M ASL - I'd rather spend 8 hours on a plane 5 days before the game than play the game at that altitude. |

I'm sure the Limeys would love enjoying their tea and crumpets while a stream of orange Popsicle zubazz wearing Florida white trash all with mullets and tats invades town. I'm sure they'll love the overweight loud Bucs fans trying to buy drafts in the pub with food stamps

Don't see any tea and crumpets there. You have a very stereotypical and uninformed view of the Brits. |

To build support of the Premiership in the USA, teams send their scrubs and reserves to play meaningless exhibition games against MLS teams.
So Goodell ups the ante by having MEANINGFUL regular season games and wants to establish a franchise in a country that doesn't give a shit about the games they've been given anyway.
