Chiefs’ roster cut day tracker: Fred Williams, Sanders Commings waived

Chiefs’ roster cut day tracker: Fred Williams, Sanders Commings waived

By TEREZ A. PAYLOR

The Chiefs have to pare their roster from 75 to 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday. Here’s a running tracker of their cuts with some analysis.

10:38 a.m. — The Chiefs have waived receiver Fred Williams, a source confirmed.

Analysis: Wow. Williams played his tail off this preseason, catching 13 passes on 13 targets in the first three preseason games and looking like a potentially playable option at wide receiver. But Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday that teams normally keep 5-6 receivers, and that wasn’t good news for Williams, who didn’t bring as much versatility on special teams that Frankie Hammond did. However, Williams, 27, should find a job somewhere. His route running has some sophistication, and there’s a place in a pass-happy league for talented pass catchers.

9:51 a.m. — The Chiefs have waived safety Sanders Commings with an injury designation, a source told The Star.

Analysis: The Chiefs had high hopes for Commings, a fifth-round pick in 2013, but injuries wiped out his first two seasons and he wasn’t quite the same once he returned this preseason. He did not play in the Chiefs’ final preseason game, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, because of injury. Because Commings was waived with an injury designation, he’ll spend 2015 on injured reserve if another team claims him off waivers.

9:51 a.m. — The Chiefs have waived inside linebacker James-Michael Johnson, a source told The Star.

Analysis: Tough break for the four-year veteran, who entered camp with an injury and missed several practices before making it back on the field. Johnson has experience, though — he helped fill in for Derrick Johnson last season — and is a useful special-teams player. Ramik Wilson’s emergence did not help his cause. Perhaps the release is good news for rookie D.J. Alexander and outside linebacker Frank Zombo.

9:41 a.m. — The Chiefs have waived tackle Garrett Frye, a source confirmed.

Analysis: Not a surprise, but the undrafted rookie has some versatility. He lined up at tackle and center this preseason, and it will be interesting to see if the Chiefs bring him back at some point.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I hate this move. Hammond is basically there as a backup punt returner and not even a good one. I can understand keeping Avant as I don't know that anyone's stepped up to be a clear possession option. But this one stings.

THen again, Chiefs fans always overrate how much other teams want these guys so I think it's very possible for WIlliams to clear waivers. But he should be on the roster, not Hammond.

It can only be an attitude/fit issue.

Otherwise, no sense is made here.

At...

all.

Hammond averaged 13 yards per punt return in 15 opportunities last year.

The NFL leader, Darren Sproles, averaged 12.97. DAT averaged 11.95.

Williams should be on the roster over Avant, not Hammond.

Avant is 32 and on a one-year deal.

Even if you wanted to make the argument that he's currently better than Williams or Brown, it's unknown if he'll even be on the roster next year. His "automatic" (as King calls it) 400 yards that we so desperately need can't be counted on longterm.

While riskier in the short term, going with one of the young guys at least gives us the potential for something much greater over time.
