I hired an exterminator and it took over a month to get it done. I also bought a power steamer and sprayed the cracks in the baseboards where I thought they were hiding. The steam kills them instantly, one time I shot the steam at the baseboard and about 50 of those mother****ers came out instantly dead. I had to weigh the risk, kill the bedbugs with steam and potentially get mold from the moisture the steam causes or not kill the bed bugs. I went with kill the bed bugs and never had mold so it was fine.

the people who moved out next door a few weeks ago were a special kind of scum
i appreciate that they kept to themselves but... letting your weed smoke waft all over the neighborhood through open windows is a no-no, and tearing down every set of blinds in the house is not a hobby. nor is leaving garbage in the front yard for months on end, because a critter tore open your bags. also it's a good idea to mow your yard once inawhile, instead of letting it turn into a literal jungle. oh and feed your dogs instead of letting them walk around like living corpses before they presumably keel over from malnutrition. sad.

Roaches are the worst. When I was a telephone installer, I always had a few plastic bags with me when I did take outs in some places. Wall phones were the worst.

I'll never forget my first horrible tenant.
Around 1985 I bought 5 houses in the town I lived in, rented them all out and began my short career as a landlord. Two of the houses were brand new construction, two were over 30 years old and the last one was about 15 years and a prior rental that needed a little TLC. As a very young, 22-23 year old, first time landlord, they saw me coming from a mile away. 1. One tenant and family was actually homeless at the time and lied about everything, including having their parents join in the fraud. I went to interview them with little notice and what I was told was their house with matching utility bills and mailbox was the father's same name. The scumbags paid the security deposit and first month and nothing ever again. They lived there 9 months rent free. 2. Tenant #2 was single Mom with 2 daughters and good references. About 3 weeks after moving in, one of the rugs in the house unbeknownst to me had fleas. They called as one of the daughters had bites on her legs. I immediately pulled up the rugs, hired an exterminator, deducted rent for days they had to stay elsewhere and paid some other items. After they moved back in they hired a lawyer and legal paper worked me to death. I had to pay THEM money and they moved out after 6 months that cost me around $5K. 3. Tenant #3 was a group of young waitresses that were good for about 4-5 months. I was also banging two of their co-workers. Suddenly one moved out and they paid me 2/3 of the rent even though I rented it to just one lead person. Then the 2nd person moved out and it went down to 1/3. For the last 4 months I got 1/3 rent and kicked the last woman out at end of year lease. 4. Tenant #4 was an elderly gentleman that was an architect that had been in business for 30 years. Clean, polite, quiet and single. His credit was good but what I didn't know was that he just lost everything he had in a divorce and his business closed. He worked from home and never recovered. I lost about 6 months rent but luckily he kept the place in excellent condition. 5. Last but not least was the FELONY FLEEING COCKROACH FAMILY. These traveling White Trash grifters knew every trick in the book. Flash cash, show up in a new rental car or borrowed fancy vehicle, stolen new clothes, hide the kids, use identity theft to present someone else's info. These ****ing hucksters moved into my new house and in 6 months turned it into a cockroach infested trailer trash mess. They disappeared about 5 months in after only paying deposit and first months rent. They never paid a single utility bill and used fraudulent means to obtain service. I moved all their remaining garbage into the garage per law on holding their possessions and bombed the house to kill all the roaches. It cost me about $3,000 even back then to clean, paint and replace the stolen appliances. About a month after they left police and process servers began showing up weekly. Seems these bastards had been on the run for 5-6 years with a host of felonies. About 6 months after the moved out, I get a phone call from the scumbag telling me he is coming back for all his belongings. My response was "you can go **** yourself. The police have been looking for you for months, you destroyed my new home and infested it with cockroaches, you paid no rent, the only belongings left were pure garbage and I took everything to the dump. When you show up I'll make sure the police are here to assist you." He hung up and that was the last time I ever heard from them, last time I owned a rental property and last time I ever wanted to be a landlord. Sold all the houses in 1987 and learned my first painful financial lesson.

Had an apartment in Chicago with a mouse infestation. Saw the little bastards all the time. Lots of droppings. Traps and poison proved completely ineffective. The morning after I got the cat, I walked out of my bedroom and saw a small, slick looking thing about the size of my thumb. It was the remains of a mouse - the cat had chewed its legs off and somehow skinned it. She was sitting a few feet away with a look on her face like "you'll never see anymore of those mother****ers in here." And we never did. |

I must have paid my dues in regards to roaches. Growing up in Hawaii and living for years in AZ, I always had to deal with them. Not so much in my home (although sometimes that) but the ****ers in those states are huge and fly so you'd see em all over the place. Disgusting sons of bitches. Moved to KC in 2020. Literally have not seen a single roach in over 3 years. Not a one. Love it.

A friend rented out a house once. Very first renter was a guy that passed some sort of background check. (Turns out he used a false identity.) After living there for a few months, he brought in a disabled woman that was bedridden. Said it was his aunt. Turned out it wasn't a relative. He was scamming her out of whatever benefits she was receiving. He left her alone while he was vacationing out of state... and she died. At some point he haphazardly wrapped the body in plastic but left it in the house so as to keep getting her benefits. Turns out he had felony warrants and the body was discovered when he was arrested at the house. The house was trashed. Massive repairs were required, including new subflooring in the room where the body had partially decomposed.

You live a full life, take risks, start businesses, travel the World, invest, deal with rich people, make a lot of money, have inexperience due to youth, learn aling the way and you will have decisions that don't work out.
No one makes it without a bad decision, including Warren Buffet, Mark Cuban, Bill Gates and other successful people. I've made a lot of great decisions too, been wealthy and have a wonderful full life. Maybe one day you will venture out of the basement and learn something of value.
