Gaz, I agree with all you say, but only #6 will come true for sure...
The head coach will be the same but hopefully at least Spurt and Stock will be gone...my guess is that JR will be here again next year... The HB situation, after the Coaching should be the priority...I hope Carl can swallow his pride and not try and play the big, strong, GM...and just sign Dillon or Garner...money shouldn't be a problem...there are always ways to make things work... DTs will be the same next year...Glock and Williams will be playing every Sunday and not practicing every week because of a hang nail or something... Bush will still be here, although possibly not as a starter...however, I would look for the Chiefs to draft a LB or 2 I agree with the loss of Szott and Gruny...Shields will probably remain...and I look for another OL high in our draft plans...I'm tired of drafting OL every year... I  as hell and I can't take it anymore... ------------------ joe "The word "genius" isn't applicable in football. Gaz,
I'm beginning to think the best chance we have of turning this thing around is if CP goes to San Diego. This seems like an obvious thing for him to do. SD would improve immediately, and KC would have a chance at a fresh start. I am afraid that CP won't fire Gun, that one or two ASSistants will do. I don't mind if CP stays as long as a new competent, proven HC is brought in (from outside the organisation). If this wish is fulfilled, I can be convinced we can make the playoffs while continuing to retool next season. As it stands right now, we are a HB and a good coaching staff away from 12-4 IMO. Re #2. Dillon will be terribly expensive now (probably commanding 6-8m/yr), and Cincy have the cash to give him. We can't compete with that unfortunately. I'd like Garner for the predicted $4m per. He's small, so we'll have to get away from our big back mentality  in order to sign him, but it should be done. A cheaper back I like a lot is Michael Pittman. He is extremely quick, but small and maybe a bit injury-prone. I wouldn't want Barber so much, he didn't seem to do anything until Thunder came along, but I am not that familiar with him to be honest. Re #3. I can't see us being able to afford to take the cap-hit you propose, given our current situation. Somebody on another thread said it would amount to c.$7m. Shame. I think you're right on with #4-6. |

1. I really believe that Carl and Gunther will be back next year. Just wouldn't be like Lamar Hunt to upset the apple cart to the extent given a 7-9 season in '98 and a 9-7 season last year. Lamar, as far as I can fathom, seems to be pleased with the job Peterson has done, play-offs and Super Bowl's not withstanding. Possibly if we were were to just fall off the edge of a cliff and tank these last 4 games horribly, then maybe a house-cleaning at the coaching staff could happen.
I forsee one, possibly two of Gun's staff getting the heave-ho: Kurt Schottenheimer being the most likely, IMO. God knows Mike Stock should have been gone some time ago. Maybe this will happen in the off-season -- Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if he stays, though. 2. We MUST get an experienced HB through F.A. I haven't seen anything leading me to believe we can successfully develop a drafted running back. 3. Agreed 4. Agreed 5. It's possible Grunny could come back next year--wonder why he would want to... 6. Yes, get a solid #2 QB through F.A. We can draft a 'project' for #3--problem is, as with the RB, there's little evidence we can bring along a young QB.
|

Bob Dole just keeps hoping that Carl leaves for greener pastures voluntarily and saves Lamar the decision.
Bob Dole also thinks that Gunther may resign. The guy was discussing it after week 1 -- how is he going to feel after a season like this? Wouldn't hiring The Tuna take care of filling both positions? |

Cormac-
RE #2: Richardson is Thunder, so I would take Barber as Lightning. With our current coaching staff, it would be a waste. We would just see them blasting Barber up the middle. However, with a new OC, I can see an inside/outside attack with Richardson/Barber. RE #3: Take the hit now, IMO. Yeah, it is gonna hurt really bad, but better to take our lumps and start recovering rather than extending the pain out for several seasons. I confess that I am not a capanomics expert, so I guess I will have to rely on Carl to make the right decision here. xoxo~ gaz anticipating a big dose of Donner and Blitzen.
|

Though I can't disagree with anything you said, I think the cap is going to play the biggest role, in what CP or a new GM can or can't do. By every projection I have read, we are at least 30-35 mil over, so that is where we will have to start. You can't be over the 68 mil projection. Elvis will re negotiate, and remove that 10 mil, immediately, but will probably count 5 mil or so, but I believe he already is, so thats a net of 10 mil minus. So now we are down to plus 20, I don't have any idea where we can do much else, Teicher gives 7mil to Glock, and 4.2 to DW, if we cut them, so that would add to the 20 mil over. I don't know if Shields is figured in or not, but based on his one year deal now, I don't think so. I really feel we may be treading in 49er like territory, and may not have the money to sign any free agents. I would love a list of contracts we are now obligated to, but can't find one anywhere on the net. Anyone know of one, I will research it for other answers.

I don't care about the Cap...if the Chiefs want a high priced FA RB...they will find a way to make it work...huge signing bonus...whatever...if they don't find a way to make it work then it will prove they are the idiots everyone believes them to be...

Gaz,
I thought you were talking about Barber as a lone-feature back. Apologies. I agree that such a two-pronged attack could work well under a different regime. About the cap figure..........I don't know much about what will go on either, but I don't think it's going to be possible to take a $7m hit to get rid of those two DTs. Then we'd have to clear $40m to get under next season's cap. I'm afraid I can't see it happening much as I would like to... |
