I've joined the ranks of pet owners. This is my first go around with a dog. My parents have had a bunch of dogs, but this is the first one by myself.

Mrs. Buehler445 is a dog fanatic and has been bugging me to get one since the dawn of time. She watches all the Animal Planet shows about dogs, so we finally got one.

Feel free to share any tips or training advice, since I'm a relative n00b.

Oh, and I couldn't help myself. I had to call him "Chief".

Had/have a few over the years .....

1.) Paper train early, firmly and consistently if it is to be an inside dog.

2.) When the dog has done something to displease you and you call it to come to you, don't physically discipline the animal, the trust level between you will diminish considerably. Verbal displeasure by the tone of your voice will tell them of your unhappiness and if you are "close" with the animal it will be much more effective.

Just common sense along the same lines as raising kids but you don't have to save for college.

I got my first dog about 3 and a half years ago and I've never regretted it. I never had a dog as a kid, that may be part of it. Welcome to the club.

Heelers, especially one's that are outside dogs are often car chasers. Do you, your dog, and your family a favor and make sure you teach Chief early that he is not to go anywhere near the road.

That said, they are very smart dogs. Congrats!

Buehler, congrats on the new dog.

Herding dogs are smart as ****, but you need to make sure to give it plenty of exercise, otherwise it will become bored and be an ENORMOUS ****ing pain.

And you'll wonder why, and the answer will be you: You will be the problem.

Such a great post. My dog is mostly Jack Russell. I have to get her out of the house and keep her occupied a shit ton. Otherwise she goes ape shit and the only one to blame is me.
