McDaniels vs Herm: Who was worse for their team?

Simple question, but I think the realization of my own take on it was somewhat surprising when I thought of it. Just curious to know how the masses feel.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

True, but there have been situations with teams playing poorly at the end of the year and then look like world beaters in the playoffs. Don't ask me to provide an example because I can't think of one at this moment but I'm sure it happened

The Cardinals lost by 40 points in week 15, I think, during their superbowl year.

Thats easy. Vermiel destroyed the Chiefs and left Herm with nothing. Herm just never accomplished anything. McDaniels truly destroyed the Broncos.

There is something to that but give me a break. We had a great O that he took from first to worst in the blink of an eye. Herm was horrific. Our team wasn't even in condition under his reign. On the other hand Vermeil is a Superbowl winning coach that gave us a great team but just couldn't get a our D together enough to win it all. He left the team in a bad way after the push but there is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL it justified what Herm did to our team. I can't even stand seeing the guys face.

Oh yeah, the offensive decline had nothing to do with losing Willie Roaf and Will Shields. Nothing to do with losing Eddie Kennison and Trent Green. All due to age.

The Chiefs' offense went from first to worst because during the Vermeil era, Carl Peterson let our veterans go old and did NOTHING to bring in young talent to replace him. So when Herm takes over, he is expected to win with Jordan Black instead of Roaf. Chris Terry instead of Tait. Etc....

And let's not forget that for as much shit as Herm got for being an offensive trainwrecker, he was also the guy who made a really shitty offense somehow work by letting Chan Gailey run a very unHermlike spread offense.

Linehan did worse than both of them, IMO. The Rams only have a few players from the '08 draft starting and none from the '06 and '07 Drafts starting. Linehan built the core for the worst 3 year stretch for a NFL team ever. McDaniels and Herm didn't do that.

Hard Knocks is not a full representation of reality.

Not to mention there were plenty of articles written after Peterson's firing that suggested that Herm was in Clark Hunt's ear toward the end of the Herm/Carl era and that he was going over Peterson's head quite a bit. I seem to recall a Teicher article that pretty firmly detailed the way Herm had slowly taken power in that organization. But the perfect proof is the way the Chiefs tore up the roster. In 20 years under Carl, how many times did Carl willingly rebuild? He was a guy constantly worried about filling seats. The idea of enduring 2-3 consecutive low-win seasons was horrifying to him. If this team were run by Carl toward the end of his tenure, he would have dumped a bunch of veterans and then immediately reloaded the roster with a few pricey veteran free agents to make us winners again.

Dude, that's why I said he left it in a bad way. Did you even read that part? That still doesn't justify first to worst. Herm sucks dick dude. The guy shouldn't even be coaching girls volleyball. Our guys weren't even in shape. That was the first thing out of Haley's mouth once he reviewed tape from the previous year.

I do agree with you on all the points you made about Carl Peterson. That firing was WAY overdue.

It justifies worst to first when your almost pro bowl QB and pro bowl left tackle and pro bowl guard leave. Teams like the Steelers and the Ravens draft well every single year and have good players to replace the pro bowlers when they leave. The Ravens lost Ogden, but immediately had Gaither and Oher ready to go when they left.

Herm is an average coach, as I said. I don't think he's a great in-game coach and yes, the conditioning left a lot to be desired. But he has a history of being a good 10-6 coach and he was leading the Chiefs in that direction, in my opinion. Nobody here should think 10-6 with a playoff loss is acceptable, but the way people act like he doesn't deserve to be a coach with that track record is strange to me. There are a bazillion coaches worse than Herm. Turns out there are also a bazillion better too.
