A CB in the 1st or 2nd?

Stop one second with the gut reaction of "the secondary is fine, Flowers and Carr are good CB's and Arenas is a good nickle back." Maybe, maybe not.

The reason I'm asking is that last year after the Jets lost in the playoffs, Tannenbaum asked Ryan what he thought the team needed the most to continue to be competitive, and Rex said athletic, physical corners. He said to beat the Manning's, Rothlisberger's, Rivers' and Brady's you needed tough physical corners. Even though they had Revis, a decent pass D, and a struggling pass rush they brought in Cromartie and used a 1st round pick on Wilson.

Even though Flowers is solid, and Carr has his moments, should KC entertain using an early draft pick on a physical CB?

I doubt Jones gets passed the Rams.

Ayers, Smith, Kerrigan are the only ones I can see "dropping" to us. Houston will be there.

What are the odds he will ever see another championship game? Far better QBs than him never make it to one, let alone two. Rex Ryan may look like Andy Ried but he is not in the NFC.

I was going to comment on this post, but DJ's left nut pretty much covered it.

If I had the option of locking up Flowers or locking up Carr at 80% of what it would take to extend Flowers, I'd go with Carr without hesitating. In fact, with the way Carr played over the last 8 games of the season, I would not be surprised to see him become a better corner than Flowers over the next season or two.

Physically, Carr has much greater upside than Flowers. He's bigger, he's stronger, he's faster in a straight line, his first step is just as good and he's pretty much the same in and out of his cuts. Mentally, he's not quite at Flowers level, but he's growing in that regard by leaps and bounds each season. If he progresses next season like he did this year, he could absolutely pass Flowers.

So to answer the question - oh hell no. There is absolutely no way this team can justify taking a CB in round 1 or 2. We have the potential to have the absolute best secondary in the AFC given no upgrades in our defensive backfield. I recognize Ryan's approach here, but the 50 years of football that preceded it don't lie.

The Chiefs will take the next step defensively when they get another body that can get after the QB and they get a legitimately imposing presence on the interior line.

No one is making any trades until the CBA is worked out.

If Pioli drafts a corner in the 1st or 2nd round this year it will be proof positive he's a colossal moron.
Its a joke to assume a Nickel CB isn't a starter in today's league, imo. But please, continue your thoughtless blathering.

Very true. He isn't the open-field tackling force that Flowers is, but Carr was better than Flowers in coverage over the last half of the season (how much of that was Flowers' hamstring is unknown). Carr was basically shut-down; impressive stuff.

Great idea. Lets eschew the rest of the roster and draft more players for the most talented position we have.

Sounds like CP to me. Cornerback or Defensive End. It's what the knowledgeable fans want.

I don't know about this Chiefs forum, but on the other ones I hang out on a lot of people were writing Carr off in season 1 and 2, when I always felt he was at least decent and showed plenty of promise.

Hopefully the people currently completely writing off TJax after an incomplete second season will keep this in mind.

The two situations are completely unrelated.

Brandon Carr would have to be William Bartee for the situations to be remotely comparable.

jackson was an embarrassment his rookie year, and got benched for a street FA brought in to be a NT his second year....

people keep trying to pretend he only 'kind of sucked' when in fact he sucked fat Yak balls.....and he was the 3rd pick in the ****ing draft and Carr was what a 5th rounder?

he might turn out to be something other than a huge embarrassment, but to this point that is all he has been....

DJ and Bowe both were benched and bounced back. TJax looked good before his injury and has looked much better this year, particularly toward the end of the season, than his rookie year.

I'm not saying he's definitely going to pan out, I'm just saying the door is open.

The problem is, like I said, I've seen these situations 100s of times over the years with particular players. No one ever remembers they had completely written that player off, much less comes back to eat crow. Yet they'll still be just as strident the next time they want to completely write some player off after 1-2 seasons. It's kind of a fascinating phenomenon to me.
