Hypothetical situation: Hit and run

You are on the road, nobody is around. You see a child crossing the street and the only other car around crashes into that child and drives off. You are the only other person around that could have witnessed this tragedy.

What do you do?

A. Stop and help the child while using your cell phone to get an ambulance and provide a weak description of the car who hit the kid and drove off and which direction they went. Also you try to provide as much assistance to the child that you are capable of.

B. You follow that bastard while using your cell phone to call for an ambulance of where the child was hit and tail the bastard until police help arrives and brings that ****er to justice, which the police probably wouldn't have been able to do if you stopped.

I think there are very strong cases for both scenarios and I am not exactly sure which is the correct response. If you are a doctor or an EMT, you obviously stop because you will have the skills to help the kid before help arrives. But an average joe wouldn't know for sure how to help, but maybe they could do something, maybe not. But by stopping, the hit and run guy most likely gets away.

What would you do?

I'd fire up the apricot BMW fast enough to read the license plate, then do a quick, tire-squealing 180 and go back to help the child. I'd call 911 while squealing to a stop, do a quick tracheotomy on the child and while I'm there, also do a quick check of his/her growth and nutrition. I'd then set up traffic diversion flares since there's no reason to have traffic snarlups. After the paramedics and cops arrived, I'd write up a quick medical chart on the child, give the police the license number and last known direction of travel. Then I'd grab a broom and clean up any broken headlights or signal lights in the street. If by that time the police hadn't arrested the perpetrator, I'd head in the direction in which the perpetrator fled, and search for the car.

Oh, and as an aside, we had a case here in Denver where a car hit two people and then fled. It has emerged that the penalty for a hit and run is less than the penalty for drunk driving, so if a person hits pedestrians while drunk, they're better off from a selfish perspective by driving off and then turning themselves in later. That's kind of screwed up.

I'd stay with the kid and do what ever I could to give him/her the best chance for survival. The hit and run driver is most likely to have some bad karma go there way.

I'd pull my .45 and shoot the driver thru the back windshield then if the kid was severly injured I'd shoot him too so he wouldn't suffer . Then I'd leave.

I actually had this scenario happen, (somewhat) when I lived in Wichita. A kid was riding his bike down Harry street when some douchebag clipped him and drove off.
I gave chase, (someone else stopped to help the kid). I chased this little bastard through a residential neighborhood for 5-10 minutes and got his plate number. I pulled over and called 911, gave then all the info and went back to work.
A few hours later, I went to Taco Bell over on Kellogg to pick up lunch for my co-workers and guess which car is in the lot?
Immediately called 911 again and watched the cops walk into the kitchen, (he worked there) and cuff the bastard.
