A ton of passing defense snaps, a ton of passing defense looks.

I watched the 2nd half of the game tonight, and marked down the different looks Bob Sutton gave Romo every time he dropped back to pass the ball.

Forgive my shorthand:
  • 4-3: four down lineman (Hali/Poe/Bailey/Houston), Berry playing alongside DJ
  • 4-3: four down lineman (Jackson/Poe/DeVito/Hali), Houston rushes ,DJ holds at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, eight players drop
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston hold at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops four times
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali drops, Houston rush
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops, DJ holds at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush, DJ drops from the LOS at the snap
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali drops, Houston rush, DJ & Jordan drop from the LOS at the snap
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops, DJ & Jordan drop from the LOS at the snap three times
  • Nickel: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali rush, eight players drop
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali & Houston rush, Berry blitzes from ROLB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali rush, Houston holds at LOS, Berry playing alongside DJ
  • Dime: poe + Jackson + Hali down, Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali drops, Houston rush, Berry blitzes from LB, Demps blitzes from 10 yards out
  • Dime: poe + Hali down, Houston drops, DJ delayed blitz, Abdullah playing at ILB, Demps blitzing from LOLB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali lined up as ILB, Houston rush, Berry blitzes from ROLB, Abdullah blitzes from slot
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali rush, Houston holds at LOS, Lewis blitzes from LOLB, DJ @ LOS at snap but drops
  • Dime: poe + jackson down, Hali & Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB, Berry lined up right over TE
  • Dime: poe + bailey + Hali down, Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB, Berry playing alongside DJ
  • Dime: poe + Bailey down, Hali drops, Houston & DJ drops from the LOS at the snap, Berry blitz from ROLB, Abdullah blitz from slot
  • 1-3-7 alignment: only poe down, Hali rushes, Houston drops, DJ drops from the LOS at the snap, Parker & Abdullah blitz from ROLB
Pretty crazy.

That is what you call a modern, complex defense.

Don't be surprised to see Berry used as the "star" a lot in this game. He will basically be used as a hybrid LB and spy on Vick. His #1 job will be to stop the read option whether it be Vick or McCoy. Auburn beat Oregon in the National Championship running variations of the nickel all day. LSU did the same thing the next year. Les Miles even practiced for the read option without a ball. Every guy just went to their assigned man. Our base defense will probably be the nickel in Philly. It matches up best against that offense and you can rotate DBs quickly. I could really see this happening.

Interesting they are using some 4-3 in there.

Also, I wonder how many times they used three safeties in the nickel and dime? Are they using the 3-3-5 nickel with Berry in the "star" position? The star position is basically when a DB plays LB.

Did Berry play back at SS and Abdullah play nickel CB some? Or, was it Parker the nickel all day? Was Abdullah ever used as the Star? It would be interesting to see the secondary assignments too.
Oh **** me mods, it is BlackBob.

There was a big variety on offense too.

didn't run duplicate plays for entire quarters at a time

big difference from the Haley R2P2 where we often ran duplicate plays in the same series

But, but, but,...you got to keep it simple so they can release their talent and play fast.

Keep in mind I only eyed the second half, but:

* The Chiefs only went nickel on a passing down once.
* The Chiefs' dime package was four safeties: Berry (there is no place he didn't line up: ILB, OLB, deep, LOS, slot, over the TE), Lewis (deep 99% of the time), Abdullah at nickel usually covering the slot, and Demps at dime frequently covering the slot.
* Abdullah, as I said, was almost always playing NCB. Never noticed him at the star, but maybe once.

Thanks man. Four safeties is pretty wild... I wonder if Abdullah will be the full time nickelback or if he was just in for Robinson?

I seemed like i noticed more safeties on the field than cornerbacks sometimes.

weird considering Dallas wasn't trying to run the ball

reflection on our corners or just health issues?

Hard to say. I'm thinking it's the health thing mostly as Robinson was out. That, and Cooper and Parker probably don't know the playbook yet.

I think they're going four safeties because they hate all of their corners. I don't even think they like Dunta that much -- they were playing him with the deep 2nd and 3rd stringers in the preseason.

Meanwhile, Reid/Dorsey have shown an affinity for versatile safeties who can cover. They drafted Commings out of Georgia who can play both, and Abdullah and Demps can both cover pretty well.

Really the only safety that doesn't cover that great is Lewis, who they used almost exclusively as a center fielder against Dallas (they played him up at the LOS a lot against JAX, though).

All they asked Parker to do anyway was blitz the one snap I saw him out there on a passing down.

Interesting and thanks for posting... I kind of think the personnel will change week to week to get the best match ups but, we'll see.

If there was ever a game they were going to use Dunta, it would be this one. He has knocked the **** out of the Eagles receivers and played them hard the last couple of years. Maybe there is a fear factor there? LOL

Direckshun, you just have too much time on your hands , but I genuinely appreciate this effort.

Unique defensive looks? flexible personnel? a creative DC?... let me just take a minute to, ah, hang on...
