Jets to release kicker Brien
Jets to release kicker Brien
BY KEN BERGER STAFF WRITER April 26, 2005 Doug Brien, whose tenure as the Jets' kicker essentially ended when the team selected Ohio State's Mike Nugent in the second round of the draft, has been informed that he will be released, a team official confirmed yesterday. Brien, whose two misses in the AFC divisional playoff loss at Pittsburgh all but sealed his fate, was excused from two days of organized team practice that began yesterday and a three-day minicamp beginning Friday, the official said. Because Brien is held in high regard among teammates, coaches and the front office, he is likely to be released quickly. Certainly, it will be done long before he is due a $375,000 roster bonus June 1. The Minnesota Vikings, who would have selected Nugent had the Jets passed, are interested in Brien. Fullback Jerald Sowell, said to be unhappy with his contract, did not attend practice yesterday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Also, despite speculation that the Jets would be a logical destination for Houston Texans cornerback Aaron Glenn, it has not been a major topic among the team brass. Glenn has been given permission to seek a trade. The Jets reportedly agreed to terms with at least two undrafted free agents, LB John Pickens (Northwestern) and OT Henry Tellis (Troy State). |
