Marin water worker accused of targeting cats

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

(03-04) 12:02 PST NOVATO -- A pipe worker with the North Marin Water District has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty for allegedly pouring antifreeze into food bowls left out for feral cats, police said today.

Corey Reed, 28, of Novato was arrested Saturday on one felony and one misdemeanor count of attempted animal cruelty, said Novato police Lt. John McCarthy.

The investigation began in January when water-district employees found antifreeze in food bowls across the street from the district office at 999 Rush Creek Place. The bowls had been left for about 25 feral cats that roam the area. No cats are known to have been sickened, McCarthy said.

Chris DeGabriele, water district general manager, said today that Reed had been disciplined and was back at work as a pipe worker assistant.

"I'm very sorry that it occurred, and I'm disappointed," DeGabriele said.

People who monitor the cats helped police focus on Reed as a suspect, authorities said.

Reed declined to speak to investigators, and authorities don't know why he might have wanted to poison the cats, McCarthy said.

The Marin Humane Society has been working with water-district employees to control the feral-cat population in the area, but authorities don't believe that was what prompted Reed's alleged actions, said society spokeswoman Carrie Harrington.

Besides, "killing cats in this inhumane matter doesn't really do anything to solve the problem of overpopulation because you'll just have new cats coming in and new colonies," Harrington said. "We've always advocated for a humane, nonlethal approach to control the population."
