The CP Post-game note to the Chiefs
Update - Some statistics on Cassel's third down problem
Some mistakes probably. I put this together real quickly.
- 3rd down conversions (excluding the Atlanta game, where he played pretty well). Cassel converted 3 of 14 (1 being a fluke - end of half screen pass to Charles).
- 3rd down conversions - I know all of you are wondering... how many times does Cassel throw to the sticks? Let's review all the third downs where Cassel threw at least a yard or 2 from the sticks or past the sticks. Out of 29 3rd down situations (since the Atlanta game in meaningful time only), Cassel completed 7 passes that were legitimately beyond the sticks.
- Why is this 3rd down talk important? It means that any stat you hear about Cassel's performance on 3rd down is largely about garbage time. It shows that Cassel has been terrible at 3rd down conversions in the first half of games, which helps explain why we dig such a big hole every game. And it shows that only less than 25% of the time is he completing passes beyond the stacks. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he's been put in quite a few third and longs. But he has not been successful at all in converting in those situations.
- Matt Cassel is 1-3
- He has 10 turnovers, which is an average of 2.5 per game
- He has been sacked 13 times behind virtually the same offensive line (over the first 3 games, at least) that only gave up 1 sack protecting Kyle Orton. That is over 3 sacks per game and he is on pace to be sacked 52 times this season
- He has a below 75 QB rating. Which is terrible, no matter how you spin it
- 568 of his 1,058 yards have come when the Chiefs were down by 16+. Yes, over HALF of his yards have come in garbage time.
- 4 out of 5 TDs he's thrown were in garbage time (team was down by 15+ points)
- When the Chiefs are in the game (< 16 point deficit), here's Cassel's stat line: 50 for 82 (61%) for 490 yards (5.98 yards per attempt). 1 TD / 3 INTs. 7 sacks.
- Needs to be updated (ESPN hasn't updated their splits yet) -- prior to today's game, he has thrown 59% of his passes either behind the line of scrimmage (18%) or within 1-10 yards.
- Romeo said Cassel provided a spark in the New Orleans game. When the Chiefs are within 7 points in the 4th quarter, Matt Cassel is 4 for 6 with a measly 24 yards. Folks, that is 4 yards per attempt
