I think most of us (including the ones who aren't big fans of Alex Smith) would be extremely surprised by that.

I've interpreted (perhaps wrongly so?) a few people as saying the fact that he wasn't given an extension is a sign that they're having a wait and see approach with him, and I just don't believe that's the case. He's their guy moving forward, I don't think there's any question about that.
