Covitz:Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher
Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher
By RANDY COVITZ The Kansas City Star It looked a bit ominous when Chiefs rookie offensive tackle Eric Fisher, escorted by club medical personnel, headed for the locker room Friday night during the first half’s 2-minute warning. Fisher, the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, started at right tackle against the New Orleans Saints and participated in all 14 plays of the game’s opening touchdown drive. As it turned out, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Fisher’s injury was minor, a sore left thumb. But Fisher spent quite a bit of time in the trainer’s room with ice on the thumb after the 17-13 loss to the Saints. “I just banged up my thumb a little bit,” Fisher said. “My hands have been banged up all camp. We’ll find out more … but I’m feeling all right.” Fisher couldn’t pinpoint exactly when he got hurt. “You’re in a zone out there,” he said. “You try to remember, but sometimes you don’t. When I came off the field, my thumb was hurting a little bit, and I got it checked out.” After he was examined, Fisher returned to the sidelines and watched the second half from the bench with the rest of the first unit. “I had a blast tonight,” he said. “It was great to play in an NFL game. It was a goal of mine for a long time, and it’s a good feeling.” If Fisher is unable to practice or play this week, he’ll join growing list of injured tackles. Backup Donald Stephenson missed the past week after undergoing surgery on a broken pinky finger on his left hand, though he is expected to return next week. The club already has lost two rookie free agent tackles for the season, Dustin Waldron and Colin Kelly with knee injuries, and Tommie Draheim is out with a concussion. The Chiefs brought in another free agent tackle on Thursday, Hutch Erickson, who was in uniform Friday night. Besides Fisher’s injury, backup defensive end Austin Lane left the game with sore ribs, and cornerback Neiko Thorpe was dehydrated and cramped. |
