Union Pacific's Last of the giant's
UP Locomotive number 2014 is on her way from Pomona California to Cheyenne Wyoming this week By John M. Glionna July 29, 2013, 1:23 p.m. It has been called the last of the giant freight locomotives, a lumbering behemoth known as the “Big Boy 4014.” For half a century it has been on display at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, drawing railroad buffs from around the nation. Now the mammoth steam engine is about to take another trip -- to the vast plains of rural Wyoming. Union Pacific Railroad officials recently announced that the company has reached an agreement to acquire the locomotive from the RailGiants Train Museum at the fairgrounds. The railroad said it plans to move the engine to maintenance shops in Cheyenne, where crews will try to get it back to running condition. “We’re really excited about the acquisition of the 2014 Big Boy,” railroad spokesman Aaron Hunt told the Los Angeles Times, adding that Union Pacific will post updates about the move, planned for the near future. Updates will be posted on Twitter @RailGiants. http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/n...#axzz2kqXe3buz web cam for anyone that wants to watch http://trn.trains.com/Union%20Pacifi...%20Webcam.aspx |

I dont know about volume, but there's no more fuel-efficient way to move cargo. Over land anyhow

Back in 80s I helped restore this USRA 2-8-0 Consolidation. about 2 years after it was up & operating, the owner who swore he would never take it if we got it running, came & took it to NC & thats where it is running today
I spent a lot of time running both loco's at the Omaha zoo & then this was built by my father & has been maintained by me for the last 10 years

Back in the 40s a passenger engine broke down and stranded people in Denver that were destined for Kansas City. The railroad guys argued over whether or not an engine designed to pull coal out of the mountains could pull people. I know, a pound of humans vs. a pound of rocks. They gambled and hooked up the powerful steam engine...
It maintained a cruise speed of 110 mph while crossing the flat planes north of Omaha. Broke that companies time record. Go figure.

Pretty cool. I took the Durango – Silverton train a few years ago and will never forget it. It would be cool if they could get this thing running on some tourist line like that somewhere.
On a sidenote I'm getting ready to go on the Copper Canyon train in Mexico in a week, and I'm super pumped about it. |

If you like Durango go check out
Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Its all part of whats left of the D&RG narrow gauge that ran through the Colorado san juan mountain range. They are lot more hands on at Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad as far as the public is concerned. I have fired two different locos up through Windy Pass. You cant feed the coal fast enough. In 1970, the states of Colorado and New Mexico jointly purchased the portion of the line from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, NM, along with much of the equipment that operated on the line. This section is the most scenic portion of the line, and a part that loops back and forth between the two states. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission was created by an act of Congress as a bi-state entity to oversee the railroad The coolest thing about CTSR is they have a steam operated rotary snow plow. & they use it 5.17 mark

The UP gets a lot of the glory, but it was the Santa Fe railway (Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe or ATS&F) that was most instrumental in development of the economy in the prairie, especially right around Kansas City. They did a lot of things, like recruiting a bunch of Mennonites from Russia to farm in Kansas. I remember riding one of their passenger trains, the "Super Chief" back in the 1960's when my grandfather was the conductor.
