Oh yeah: the other lowlight. I was the last wedge on kick return team... We got 64-0'd. I was getting lit up like a ****ing Guy Fawkes effigy.

I had a play on a WR screen where I ended up isolated 1-1 vs. a DB that I actually had about 20 lbs on (extremely rare for me at about 145 lbs) and I decided I was going to stutter step around him...he dove through my knees because I was a big pussy. WR coach dragged me off the field and let me have it. The guy was way more athletic than me so I had no business trying to juke him and the coach ripped me for not just driving through him. He was dead right. At that level, you can make up for a lot of shortcomings by just being reckless. I damn sure was not. By my Senior year I'd had a growth spurt so I was at about 5'10'', 155 and pretty strong b/c of our weight program but the desire/aggression just never came so I practiced for a week during summer before bailing.

I was an LB and RB.
Played all 4 years. Was basically the same size from sophomore season on (5'8" 145). Quit during my senior season because I played more varsity as a junior and the coaches wrote off the season after 2-3 games and started playing underclassmen to try and get them ready for the following season. I loved to hit. I doled out quite a few concussion-causing blows during practices and games. I was on all the special teams because I just ran down the field like a maniac and would lay into the biggest guy I could find. Shit was fun as ****. One of my coaches used to laugh because I was known to give a juke move and then just run the defender over on occasion. |

I see no reason to lie about it now. The sport is pretty rough. It was certainly pretty jarring for me having not played a lick of organized ball until my sophomore year. As you say, a lot of those kids had been playing in pads for several years. If they hadn't, they were almost certainly bigger than me. |

**** that noise. I wasn't going to play football in college. I decided I'd rather enjoy having free time after school for the first time in my scholastic career. So instead of practicing and not getting to play, I got stoned and ****ed my gf (she went to a different school) more often. Edit: I went to Raytown. Our team sucked and was going to suck for the foreseeable future. We had a running joke with our alcoholic piece of shit coach. We would check the trash can outside of the weight room to see how many empties were in there. We knew how hard practice would be after checking the trash can (that coach didn't get fired for another 2 years). |

I didn't really start to embrace contact until midway through SR year where I was like, "**** it. I'm stronger than most of the people we're going up against,". Even then, when I started to pancake some defenders and body slam a LB(occurred almost near the end of the regular season), I was very hesitant in leading my block as I wanted to engage the LB with my hands or shoulder and not my helmet. Even then, on occasion, I'd go helmet to helmet during a game(only had one concussion prior to playing fullback, none when I was fullback) and I would be absolutely petrified.

I remember my first tackling drill in two-a-days. 1-on-1, I went through it three times. First time I made contact but didn't wrap up so he just drove through me as I bounced off. Second time (after my first taste of live contact) I was scared so I just put my head down and dove. Completely whiffed. Third time I hit the guy around the shoulders and just managed to hang on to his ankle. Finally tripped him up to end the drill.
All in all, it was pretty embarrassing given the fact that everyone was watching. The coaches knew I was scared. They said I'd run like Barry Sanders when the bags were out (you know those bags the defenders hold and they just make a bit of contact with the runner as he runs through) and I did because I knew there'd be no pain. Once it was a live drill my dick would shrivel up and I'd hesitate too often. Like I said, it got better as the season went on. By the end I was routinely making tackles in 1-on-1 tackling drills and had worked my way up to starting deep man on KR. I always wished they'd have given me a shot at RB during an actual game. |

heh, I almost forgot to mention my racist offensive coach (he was a black dude from Garden City). He told me that I would never run the ball for him at the varsity level when I was a junior because I wasn't black. I said back to him, "But you can run my ass into the ground on JV though huh?" He replies, "You're goddamn right and don't forget it." That dickhead also coached our sophomore basketball team and almost got in a fight with my best friend who played for him. The coach was matched up with my friend while they were scrimmaging in practice. The coach kept getting rough with my friend. When my friend reciprocated the rough play, the coach bucked up to him like he wanted to fight. My friend left the team a week later. Our coaches were a disaster. |

No real highlights here.
Only reason I really played was because our town had a pretty decent history of being a football school and the coaches recruited the farm kids hard. I would have rather been doing something else but, looking back, I enjoyed the experience. If any of you were a very thin black RB from Benton with Barry Sanders like jukes and massive hurdling skills, I'm sorry. They sent me up the middle to end your life. I threw up at halftime and that stinger was probably the reason I never hit anyone that hard again and basically sucked at football the rest of the year. |

[QUOTE=Buehler445;11548315]I ran cross country. I thought I had a better chance at being good. I was meh. I probably would have been meh at football too.
Given the fact that my knees are junk now it is probably good I didn't. But I was the kid that was skinny as a freshman but big as a senior and looked weird in a cross country course.[/QUOTE "My sport is your sport's punishment." Always made laugh when I was helping coach high school football on a Tshirt worn by the cross country coach. This poll is funny for linking high school and college together. I'm old but there was a big difference in my experience. So old that my first USMC attack squadron had 7 out of 12 of us pilots that played Div 1 or NFL. NFL had like a million draft rounds in the 70s and then contracts unless you were a stud were all incentive laden and $ not so much. Why guys that got cut joined the Corps to fly. Used to talk a lot of smack to each other in the air about our former football failings and stories. But we put together some good squadron and MAG teams. Roger the knees. |
