You must be hanging out in some dump of a tourist trap area. Wherever you go in this world, it is about one thing and one thing only: Location, location, location.

Next time you make it this way, please let me know and I will gladly tell you where to go for a great experience. Just bring lots and lots of money or you may find yourself next to a drunk. Worse yet, if you choose to stay in a seedy hotel with paper-thin walls you will most likely hear all the things you described in your post...

One area that I happen to dislike the Upper West Side of Manhattan - Hate the brownstones. There is nothing clean looking about them.
