Can Weddle replace Berry?

Weddle had a down season playing on a horrendous San Diego defensive roster but the man is a proven product and is hungry for a title. Berry on the other hand seems to be $$ driven and is showing no signs of giving us a home team discount with the rumors going around the NFL. I find that disappointing given how the organization stood by him during his illness. Despite being 'comeback player of the year' his game footage was actually quite mediocre with only 55 tackles, poor coverage of tight ends, and oftentimes late to help corners on deep routes.

For 2 years, $12 million...I can't help but think that Weddle would be a great fit in this defense* and gives us adequate time to draft a long term replacement. This also gives us the ability to retain Howard and spend money on either Sean Smith or a free agent corner/linebacker.

Weddle, Poe, Howard, Houston, Peters would be a helluva lineup!

Of course they do. And, ultimately, I'd say the extension has worked out OK for us. As have Jamaal's and Houston's.

But that extension, at the time he signed it, was pretty hefty.

Berry will sign this contract. It'll be the #1 safety contract in the league. Then the next guy will sign and he'll get more, and the next guy, and the next guy. Until this shit will look like a bargain in three years time.

That's just the way escalation works.

So if it's cool for Alex to get an extension way above what he's worth at the time, why can't Eric Berry get Earl Thomas money or slightly above? After all, in 2 or 3 years he won't have the top safety contract anymore, so what's the big deal?

If Sutton had called a lot more press/man with some well timed blitzes, Berry WOULD have contained Gronk, because Brady hates being under pressure.
