Patrick Mahomes has the same 40 yd dash as Peyton Manning

Now that I have your attention. He's much more elusive than that. I looked up every 40 yard dash, 10 yard split, 20 yard split, 20-yard shuttle, and 3-cone times of QBs I could find. At least of the QBs not old, about burnt out and over 36 years old (I looked the 30 or so Top QBs under 37)

If there is anything that I think is over valued it's the 40 yard dash, at least in any position other than wide receiver & kick returner. Wouldn't short burst quickness & agility measurables be the best way to evaluate football speed?

One thing I noticed about Patrick Mahomes is he's virtually average to slightly below average in 40 yard & 20 yard straight line speed.

BUT - he's absolutely the quickest and most agile of ANY quarterback except for maybe Lamar Jackson (who for some reason didn't run at the combine). When you start talking about the 20-yard shuttle and the 3-cone drill he is elite. His change-of-direction agility is off the charts.

He has the FASTEST 20-yard shuttle time of 4.08 of any QB in the league. He has the SECOND fastest 3-cone drill out of all of the QBs.

Both of these tests he was faster than Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson, Cam Newton, Mitch Tribisky, Josh Allen, Marcus Mariota. I'm not even naming the slow guys.

Carson Wentz believe it or not is the closest comp to Mahomes in terms of agility & quickness, but Mahomes has him at 4.08 vs 4.15 in the 20-yard shuttle.

TOP QBs in 20-yard shuttle
Patrick Mahomes
Russell Wilson
Marcus Mariota
Drew Lock
Carson Wentz
Cam Newton

TOP QBs in 3-cone drill
Patrick Mahomes/Carson Wentz/Mitch Trubisky (all within 0.01 of each other)
Marcus Mariota
Josh Allen
Cam Newton

Yeah, his instincts are amazing.

That dude is as slippery as I've ever seen a QB be.

I would include vision, pocket presents and over all situational awareness.

There was a play a few games back where he looked back before a scramble, checking the position of the trailing defensive ? tackle.

Another thing about mahomes TD run, for as good and powerful runner as he is, it's rare to see him take on defenders. Which is what made it extra special. That's a huge credit to coaching. When he first played preseason games he was trying to barrel everyone over. In many of his runs now he goes untouched. He's not running because he wants to test the defense. He's running either to find time to throw or because he sees a spot to run to. He knows when to run. Even on his td run he was talking specifically about why the coverage dictated that he should take off and run.

I mentioned in another thread that not a lot is said about mahomes playing high school basketball. To me, he runs like a point guard. There's no tackling in basketball. And mahomes has a lot of really subtle moves and quick bursts to dodge defenders instead of going through them. You don't see him juking or stutter stepping a lot like lamar.
He would have been a mid-major D1 basketball recruit as it was, and who knows how good he would have been if he focused his energy on that. Behind baseball and football, it was his 3rd sport.

I could see him being a lock down perimeter defender.

Are you sure that Pat runs the 40 in the same time as Manning? Because Manning is and always has been dead slow. I'd figure his 40 time to be mid-5s at best. And I thought I read somewhere that Pat ran a 4.8?

Never mind, I found it. Can't believe it. Payton Manning ran a 4.8 40.

As you stated in your opener, it just goes to show you that straight line speed doesn't mean shit for the most part in the NFL

I'd say Mahomes scrambling/rushing ability is comparable to Ben Roethlisberger though I think Mahomes is better in that regard. It says Ben's 40 time is 4.75 which is nearly the same as Mahomes.

Manning was an elusive badass in his younger years.

It takes a special talent to make KC's front line appear top-level.

Tom Brady dies behind that line.
