I was thinking about the Brady Bunch the other day.

Supposedly Mike and Carol Brady were both widowed before they met and married. How common is it for a couple of under-35 people to meet as a widow and widower? Is it possible that they met, fell in love, had an affair, and then killed each other's spouses for the insurance money? That would help explain the nice big house and the maid.

What about the lost Brady Bunch episode "Bobby Brady: Fire Bug???"
www.fritzliess.com/.../ week_2003_10_26.html

Bobby Brady — Fire Bug

Intended air date: October 13, 1971

Trivia
The series was created by Sherwood Schwartz, the same person who created Gilligan’s Island five years earlier. This censored episode was reportedly co-written at one of Schwartz’s infamous Hollywood parties by his guests Hunter S. Thompson and Norman Mailer.

Plotline
Cindy gets all the attention after she slips on Greg’s skateboard and breaks her ankle. Bobby gets jealous and decides to pull a few practical jokes on the family to get some attention of his own! After torturing Tiger the dog to death with an old car battery, Bobby goes on an arson rampage that leaves half of the neighborhood in smoldering ruins! Not to worry! When Dad gets home, he gives Bobby a fatherly lecture that sets him back on the straight and narrow!

This episode also featured the very first nude scene in a TV sitcom. Greg goes neighborhood window peeping and spies Mrs. Baxter (a very young and buxom Adrienne Barbeau) getting ready for bed. She soon sheds her powder blue babydoll nightie and gives Greg an eyeful! The laughs really start when Mr. Baxter (Dack Rambo) catches Greg in the bushes and forces him to drink drain cleaner at gunpoint!

I'm not sure how that contradicts what I wrote. Anyway, according to Barry Williams' "Growing Up Brady" (p. 172):

"Sherwood (Schwartz) and the network locked horns over the fate of Carol's first husband. Sherwood wanted him alive, well and happily divorced from Carol, but the network demanded his death. Sherwood met with the brass, smiled, nodded and was extremely polite, but paid no attention to their suggestions; he left the fate of the girls' father uncertain. You may notice she never refers to the guy as being dead. In Sherwood's mind, Carol Brady was television's first divorcee."

That would seem to confirm my contention that "The background, though, is that Sherwood Schwartz wanted her to be a divorcee, but ABC didn't want that specified."

The show was ruined for me when I read Kevin's initial post, but then I read listo's theory and it all makes sense again.

I think the neighbors knew that something was fishy. In five years, I don't think a neighbor ever talked to a Brady once.

Well, that's a good point. But you have to admit, the first floor was nice. It's odd that they had that enormous living room with dining area, a good-sized kitchen, a bedroom for Alice, a den off the kitchen, and a home office for Mike on the first floor, and then they had only three bedrooms on the second floor.

And where was the first-floor bathroom? Maybe it was in that little hallway to Alice's room, but I never saw anyone use it.

In retrospect, it seems a little selfish of Mike to not let Greg or Marcia have the home office as a bedroom. I know that they converted the attic and all, (even though that style of house shouldn't have had an attic bedroom), but still...
