Tip Jars are out of Control

Just got back from picking up my lunch at a Chinese restaurant drive thru. Pull up to order and what is taped to the drive thru window.... A MF'n TIP CUP!!!!!!! It is a Freaking Drive Thru in a fast food restaurant and you want a tip???????? Good God these things have gone to far.

Hell no. If I have to drive to go get it and am taking it back home, they aren't doing anything that deserves a tip. But if I eat there and a waitress serves me, or I sit at home and a driver brings me my food, then a tip is warranted.

This is why I always start a tab, then give a small tip at the end of the night. The bartender has to give you good service in hopes of getting a good tip, but you don't have to pay an extra dollar for each beer.

I never said I don't tip or tip my barber. In fact I do tip my barber for a good haircut. I was commenting on dog groomers. Although some of the haircuts prior to this barber might be considered the same as dog groomers.

speaking of tabs, have you ever been in a bar, gotten one drink, then had the bartender tab you out because she was leaving and wants her dollar? I've had it happen several times in a row. I left a place with 4 receipts, all for 3 drinks or less.

I say this with the most sincerity but:

WTH are you talking about???????? I am guessing a movie reference but no clue?

I pretty much ignore tip jars. If I feel someone deserves a tip, I give it to them. I want them to get the $, not split it up between a half-dozen other people.


Another thing on the same subject that irritates me is the mandatory tip most resturaunts add for large groups of people. To me, the tip is something given for good service, but to demand it be given is tacky IMO - And, I have noticed that those that automatically add the tip into the order usually give the poorer service to boot.

Good point.........

What I have done under those circumstances is, if I get bad service, I've raised hell with the manager until the "mandaatory tip" was lowered, or the price of the meals. I have had it happen twice.

I know when I worked in restaurants, that was the servers option to do or not. I rarely auto-tipped anybody, but just wondering what it is about you that made them think you are a cheap bastard.

Were you profiled? Or do you stiff people and return to the same restaurant? As a rule, if you stiff a server, for whatever reason, the rest of the staff will know all about it and you aren't likely to ever get good service unless you wait out the staffing turnover. Not saying it's fair, especially the profiling bit, but it happens.
