Morningstar's defense has been incredibly overrated by people like yourself because of his competition (primarily jump shooters like Budinger and Christmas). He's a tiny slow white guys that lacks athleticism, and the only reason he hasn't been exposed yet (except for the Syracuse game) is that the teams haven't been good enough (or focused enough) to attack him in one-on-one situations. When that happens, his flaws will become obvious, and it will cost KU.

Temple and Arizona both tried to got after Morningstar ..... he didn't let them because he worked hard at DENYING his guy the ball so they couldn't.

If he faces players that have the ability or willingness to attack him, he will be exposed like the Syracuse game.

he avg 7.8 ppg and shoots close to 50% from 3pt range ... he doesn't turn the ball over and he can play 30+ minutes each without fouling out even though he draws the top defensive assignments that used to be saved for Brandon Rush.

He doesn't have Rush's long arms and quick feet, and will struggle in the long run if that's the role they put him in.

That said, he's basically the only player on the team making jump shots which opens the floor for Sherron and Cole, so you have to leave him in there for now.

No, my argument is that they haven't played anybody outside of Syracuse who has the capability of exposing his flaws (Tennessee did yesterday, but the players lacked focus and the coaching was poor).

But having a defender lock down jump shooters is an important asset for a team to have, no? Budinger, for example, has no interest in attacking off the dribble. I'll agree Morningstar is slow and not athletic, but he is a tenacious defender who doesn't take possessions off. So isn't it smart to put him on guys like Budinger -- Morningstar didn't fall asleep and let him get free points?

Sure, and I'll admit he's better than that than I thought, but there are players in the Big 12 that are very capable of attacking him, and they will do so.

Morningstar being the primary defender will hurt KU agaisnt the better, well-coached teams.

And we also know that to play defense for a Bill Self team, you have to do it really, really well, or you're not going to play. Now Morningstar has had two seasons (one as a redshirt) to learn how to play Bill Self defense. Releford is still learning, and if all you're going to do is play defense and not contribute offense, it's going to be that much harder to steal minutes from a guy that can score and play defense.

Cole cant pass the ball too himself. In that game he had 4 touches... your gonna blame that on him. FYI... he did, said he could of gotten more offensive rebounds. Thats class. Rather then toss the guards under the bus and say they didnt feed him.

It's not about that. It's about his intensity level that game. He was pushed around (and basically completely owned) by elite prospect Jordan Hill on both ends of the floor.

I'm going on what the scouts and coaches have been saying about him all along. He has the ability to score, but he's not going to go out of the way to try and score. He's not a great jump shooter, and though he's fast with the ball, he doesn't try and create off the dribble in the offense.

He's a defender.

If you need a consistent 8-12 ppg -- like this team will need with all the young players figuring things out on the fly -- you go with Morningstar, not Releford.
