Ah ... okay. Yes, that makes sense. I was having some difficulty following along, there.

This whole "read" and "progressions" and "looking off defenders" stuff is, apparently, a very serious problem for Cassel ... you're right about that. It has to be one of two things, though ...

Either he is instructed by Weis and Haley to take the first option on every pass and, if it's not available, throw the ball away ...

or ...

He just doesn't have the ability and/or the patience to stand in the pocket and go through progressions.

It seems as though, in every game, he misses the open man (or doesn't see him at all) and tries to force the ball into coverage. Of course, defenses are keying on his eyes ... that much is obvious ... which is one of the main reasons he's throwing to blanketed receivers. Then, there's the problem with his delivery ... it's agonizingly slow. His mechanics are reminiscent of wading through 5 feet of Bass-o-Matic sauce.

We need to either get Cassel to step up his game or we need to find us another guy. I'm 100% sure that Haley would like to have a guy who can accurately put the ball in the air ... deep.

This post I guess sums up the way I feel best. Cassel has improved considerably. But,as you stated Mr Fax, he needs to improve on his progressions and not telegraphing his throws. And, we need enough of a deep threat to at least keep opposing defenses honest. As it is, teams can put 8 or 9 defenders in the box against us and know that they won't get burnt deep. And IMO you have to take a couple of shots down the field anyway to at least keep opposing defenses from filling the box. Something we're not doing.
