The NFL doesn't have to award us a comp pick for him. In all likely hood, they wouldn't give us a comp pick for a player that didn't play but 5-6 games and the Chiefs gave up nothing for.

UPDATE 10:35 p.m. ET: As a reader pointed out on Twitter, claiming Orton has another benefit. When he leaves as a free agent in March 2012, the team that employs him for six weeks would be in line for a compensatory draft pick. So there’s one more good reason to consider doing it.

The placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor.

The Chiefs are not going to get much for a player who plays 6 games. Maybe if he gets a monster contract next season. But who's going to give KO a monster contract?
