Not at all. Mark Mangino made way too many enemies in Lawrence.

If he were better liked then boosters would have lined up to fight Perkins in his dismissal. Unfortunately Mangino never took the time to build the alliances you need to survive at the BCS level.

If I'm wrong then why hasn't Mangino been hired by anyone else?

His football intelligence is undeniable. It's his personality that got him run out of Lawrence and is preventing him from getting in anywhere else.

And if you're a guy that's likely going to shun the same kind of 'requirements', you're probably not too keen on walking into that environment.

For most major universities that give a large rat's ass about their football programs, winning will do the trick. I guess at KU, you need to make sure you're buddy/buddy with the right cattle ranchers.

Defending the way KU handled Mangino says more than any MU fan could ever say. You fellas deserved 2 years in the abyss with Gill after that garbage.

So why hasn't he been hired anywhere else?

He's been openly campaigning to coach again.

Because you folks did a hatchet job unlike anything I've ever seen. Kansas and Lew Perkins did absolutely everything they could to make the man as toxic as possible so they could save face and a few bucks in the settlement discussions.

As far as major Universities with major donors and public exposure are concerned, perception is reality. The guy has been excoriated publicly, it will take a few years for that stain to wear off him and he becomes hireable again (hell, look at Leach).

If Mangino were truly this slovenly demon you Beakers tried to paint him as, you probably could've shoved him out the door and not given him a dime; termination for cause. As it is, you gave him a nice little settlement...then proceeded to trash an empty chair after he left.

It was horseshit. Keep on defending it, you only make yourself look worse.

OK, let me know when Mangino gets a job. I want to make sure I don't miss it.

But I thought KU was such a shit school? Who would care how the administration painted him?

I'm was very happy with what Mangino did at Kansas.

He had a terrible season going out the door. Should he be given another chance to continue? Probably, but it's in the past. Time to move on.

Your hatchet men did their work well.

Though when he does latch on somewhere, I'm pretty certain they'll be better than Kansas within 24 months.

Not only that, but Perkins was working against him during the season, midseason or so it was widely known, who knows how long the school was actually doing it. The butthurt parents may just have been the public reason.

You folks? I remember a large amount of KU fans that were absolutely stunned and embarrassed the way that Lew ran him out of town. At the same time, the Lawrence people (me being one of them) were not sad to see the guy go. He was a class A asshole. There were people working in the football dept that were celebrating his departure, he was that type of person. He made very few friends there with the way he treated people. That had more to do with the lack of booster support he received than anything.

The worst railroading he got was from the local Media. They had it out for him and kept banging their drum throughout the entire process. KU football's worst enemy has been the LJW sports media for a long time. They have personal agendas and biases running very deep, and Mangino treated them extremely poorly. Having the biggest Talk Sports Radio Host (KK) in the nearest metro hating your collective guts and using his show as a personal soap box for all things anti-KU doesn't help either. But in the end, it was handled poorly, yes. It was horrible, and Lew deserved plenty of criticism for this. But Mangino did himself no favors. Had he established relationships locally, he wouldn't have been run out of town so quickly cause people would have defended him. He made his own bed, however.

Don't feed it. Rival fans wanting it both ways.

I had similar feelings about him. He was a dick, but he won football games making his actions tolerable.

When you go 1-9 in conference and still act the way you do I can see the people who have to work with him day in and day out wanting him gone.

Like I said, in CFB you need allies, and HCMM had none. He still doesn't otherwise he'd be working.

Yeah, that's pretty much my read on it. "You folks" is referring to the KU administrators; I could've been more clear.

College football is loaded with assholes; I mean absolutely infested by them. If you win, you stay. If you take a shit program and win, you get to stay even longer.

Being an asshole rarely costs a guy with the successes that Mangino had his job. And it even more rarely does so in a fashion that costs him his career (I couldn't believe the daily blasting the folks in the region where given the guy).

I think it's naive to suggest that the coaching community doesn't see that as a major black mark on the Kansas job.

I have no doubt that people would look at the face value and have questions. But at the same time, most these guys are smart enough to know that the guy behind most of the crap that happened recently at KU (with Mangino in particular) is long gone.

I certainly understand what you are saying. I've used stereotypes for businesses in my career decisions before. I've been offered a job from a large company here in KC but ended up not taking it due to hearsay regarding the company's culture.

But I also don't think it's so cut and dry as some of the KU-haters make it out to be.
