(We'll see what happens when I get to Ilum, Corellia's still only level 47...) Hell, I just wish I could play the freaking thing. I did a couple of quests this morning on Corellia and it's the first time I've done anything but space combat in well over a week. Fortunately my latest video project ends (fingers crossed) today. |

Oh, and a crew skill update. I finally got the recipe for the artifact level focus I wanted from Artifice. I've now made nearly twenty of them and have not gotten my Mastercraft crit yet. It's driving me nuts. At least the Superior versions are sometimes selling for 50k credits on the GTN. I hope they keep selling, because I have 10 sitting in my bank.
I still haven't gotten the earpiece recipe from Cybertech, and I have to be over 50 prototype earpieces reverse engineered now. It's crazy, just an epic run of bad luck. I've twice had a red message appear telling me that I already know the recipe, meaning I got a reverse-engineering crit, but not a new recipe. I'm starting to wonder if something is broken... These level 48-49 artisan recipes must be crazy hard to get for everyone, though, because so far I'm the only person that I've seen selling these particular focii on the gtn. Although maybe sages just buy them up that quickly (but I don't think it's that). I've even contemplated upping my price since it appears I have a captive audience. |

I know on armor and gear, if you crit when making a purple, two extra slots open up that you can add stuff to. Augment slots I think they are called.

Yeah, artifact is purple. When you get a purple recipe for an equippable item, they can be one of 5 different types (there's actually 15 different types, depending on what kind of base prototype crit recipe you began with). They'll say they're [Superior] which is the basic artifact recipe. If you get a crit, that will change to [Mastercraft] and the item will have one extra augmentation slot. I currently have two artifact level 49 Surge augments sitting in my bank waiting to be equipped.
I can explain the recipe stuff in a little more detail later when I get home from work if you want. It's fairly complicated. |

OK, I just did some research and I think the mastercraft stuff and the prefixes only apply to the wieldable/wearable items and not the mods.
/whew EDIT: found this and it seems to be a nice visualization of the process.

And, honestly, at this point in the game there's really little reason to spend all this time and effort on the crafting, because the dailies, hm flashpoints and, particularly) PvP all give better items in the end. PvP is purportedly the easiest route of all, and you can kit yourself in gear at 60 valor that's better than you get from operations. However, I don't want to turn level 50 into a grind, so I'm sticking to the path laid-out by my class story, and continuing through the bonus quests series' as I had always planned. So for me at least, it is worth the time to do the crafting (which really isn't any time, since I can do it while I'm questing or at work, which is I think the genius of crafting in this game...), because it's far-and-away the best equipment available without grinding. The difference it made for my level 50, going from blue level 47 mods/gear to purple level 48-49 was just monumental. But if you want the faster, easier path, don't bother with it, and just go straight to grinding. |

I actually leveled a synthweaver to 400, too, in addition to my cybertech and my artificer. So I'm wearing the level 50 custom gear. It looks pretty nice, and I haven't seen anybody else wearing it so far.
(The mask is not part of the gear, I just wear it sometimes...) |

This is a really good way to gear yourself out in Purple (better than crafted) armoring, mods, and enhancements for orange armor and get blaster barrels or LS hilts for your weapons in about 8 days or so.
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=176836 Which leads me to a thought. If you can mod yourself doing these better than anything that can be crafted in the game, then the only two valuable crafting skills to know are slicing and biochem, and biochem being the much more important of the two. |
