"real gas"? I'm pretty sure the EPA has mandated the use of ethanol so all stations must use an ethanol blend. As for lower MPG yes, Ethanol contains around 30% less energy than the same amount as "real gas". Its not in gasoline to increase MPG's.

There are two stations that I am aware of where i can get ethanol free gasoline in 87 octane. It's about 10 cents higher, but worth it. |

I live where there are two gas stations here that sell pure gasoline but the stations look so old im thinking they still have the old metal tanks under ground holding the gas. So I only buy for my lawn equipment.

I think most everyone who doesn't receive tax free gas would probably agree with you here.
I never put that shit in my tank. Luckily, every gas station in NE offers regular. They've actually made some improvements to ethanol over the last few years but you can't polish a turd. |

I had a friend tell me years ago that ethanol was way worse for gas mileage. I assumed it would not be because of the higher octane. As an experiment, I tried just regular unleaded, and like the OP noticed 3mpg immediately. i have not put ethanol in any of my vehicles since. It's 10 cents cheaper, but when I figured out the mileage variance, it's actually more expensive to run ethanol.
Now the same friend bought a new 2012 truck, and he says it's way better on ethanol than regular...so I guess the newer engines are designed for it? I dunno, but since a new vehicle is not in my future, it's regular gas for me...

Not a total mandate, at least most of the stations around here offer both 10% blend and plain gas.
