NHL and NHLPA reach an agreement - lockout FINALLY over
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...cba-framework/
NHL lockout: Owners, players reach tentative agreement on CBA framework After more than 16 consecutive hours of bargaining on the 113th day of the lockout, the NHL and NHLPA reached a tentative agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement around 5 a.m. Sunday. “We have reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said during a news conference, standing next to NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr. “We’ve got to dot a lot of I’s and cross a lot of T’s,” Bettman said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework of the deal has been agreed upon.” The deal still requires ratification from the players and the NHL’s Board of Governors before it becomes official, but the league is expected to play a 50- or 48-game season that starts no later than Jan. 19. |

Should be an act of Congress starting both a union head and league president / commissioner should lose their jobs if they allow a sport to grt locked out.

Sadly this doesn't fix their crappy TV deal, and means I still won't be able to see my Av's without paying for it. So frustrating.

When sports miss entire seasons like the NHL and MLB it's easy to turn on them. I became a NHL fan for for a period, but after losing a season and lack of TV it's hard to follow. I'm sure it would be a different story had OKC or KC got a team though because for whatever reason I still care about the ****ing Royals.

There was a rumor that the big market owners told Bettman a canceled season wasn't an option... hope that's true and hope they're getting just as tired of his bullshit as everyone else.
I've heard the suggestion of making NHL Center Ice or GameCenter free for the season... hope that happens, because after all this bullshit I'm not going to pay to watch the Avalanche. It's a damn shame, too, because it should be a good season.

I remember back in the 90s when FOX tried to make hockey popular by introducing the glowing puck.
It's a niche sport like MLS. It's never going to be as popular as the NFL or MLB but that's ok. They still have a loyal, passionate fanbase.

I don't want it to become as popular as the NFL, and I certainly don't want it managed like the NFL and one day see it become all about offense. I don't want expansion, I don't want a watered down league. Keep hockey on NBC/CBS sports and NHLN with few commercials during the game and no commercials during OT. And when I talk hockey, I don't want to talk about fantasy hockey.
