I did that when I got to work and it did sound better, but the engine light was still on. Do you think it's safe to drive it 30 miles up the highway like that?

I'd alsmost venture to say if it 'just' now happened, and hasn't been a detoriating issue, it could be electrical. Since electrical either works, or doesn't.
Usually 'Bulletins' aren't covered (no cost) once out of warranty. Sounds like you should still be covered? ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE Bulletin Number: PIP-4990 Bulletin Date: Dec 2011 Summary: BUICK/CHEVROLET/GMC/PONTIAC/SATURN: SOME MODEL YEAR VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE SERVICE ENGINE SOON (SES) LAMP ILLUMINATED. ?
I think if a service bulletin (not a recall) is issued and the vehicle is still under warranty, it should be fixed at no cost. if out of warranty, it's $ out of your pocket etc.

oh cool, car talk. We'll need more information sir. What's theyear, make and model of your car? When's the last time you changed your battery? Were your lights on? Is there a loose belt?
Sounds like the alternator to me...Go to advance auto parts or some auto parts place that checks your battery for free.

The dealer will hook it up to the computer and be able to tell right away what the issue is. It sounds like a sensor issue to me.
