If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. Ya we may have a game where we aren't playing well and lose 35-20 or something but not 35-3. We were in the games against elite teams

Here is why I think this fails. Here are Smiths attempts and QB rating for the last 4 years.
09 33.8 att/game 81.5 QB Rating 10 31.09 att/game 82.4 QB Rating 11 27.8 att/game 90.7 QB Rating 12 21.8 att/game 104.1 QB rating The 2012 Eagles averaged 38.6 att/game. So as you can see what the "QB Whisperer" Jim Harbaugh did took the ball out of Smith's hands more. Boom. All of a sudden he is "better". Hopefully Reid adjust, but a lot of these guys get their system and phiolosphy and don't want to vary from it, or just resort back to it out of instinct. If Alex throws 38 times a game you are on pace to be looking at Matt Cassell/Mark Sanchez type results. Last edited by BigCatDaddy; 05-08-2013 at 08:44 AM.. |

Alot of those "pass attempts" are going to be screens and flares to Charles, Dex, and Knile

Avery was also a great signing, because his deep speed will allow more room for the underneath stuff.
Yeah, yeah Smith doesn't throw deep much, but D's aren't going to allow Donnie to streak down the field uncovered.

This isn't the first "fast" guy he has ever played with.

At the risk of repeating what someone might have explained. Reasons for the low pass attempts include:
- Harbaugh loves his balanced offense... even did with the Great Andrew Luck as his QB. - We do have the excellent Frank Gore, and many of our OL drafted prior to Harbaugh were there more for being dominant run blockers. - SF has one of the best defenses and punters in the game... playing the field position game was always a high priority to our defensive minded coaches prior to Harbaugh. - passing games were said to always take the longest to evolve in a new scheme... which we so frequently had from all of the coaching carousels. - even the dynamic Kaepernick was averaging 27 attempts per game (the games counted after he shared snaps in STL after Smith concussion) - some may have it implanted in their heads that Alex will fail if asked to throw the ball more. I really don't think this will be a problem. As long as the threat of the run stays reasonably strong (for PA too), more attempts shouldn't be some horrible detriment to success. *not forcing this opinion on others... just stating my opinion on it. |

In prior years, Alex definitely threw a lot of underneath dump-offs to the backs. It was clear to most that in 2012, he was making far more outside throws to his WRs.. getting them more involved. There will definitely be some clear-out dumps to the backs.. and they will probably work well. I'd say that Alex definitely improved in getting away from so many dump-offs though.

Yup, which is why we have to hope Alex's balls finally drop this year.

So you can see the frustration of giving up basically a 1st round pick for a guy that only is successful when asked to do less? |

So typical of Chiefs fan think. I hope we win 7 and avoid drafting (Insert QB name)- even though there's a year before the next draft, and we have no idea what his stock will do in that year - because drafting a QB is too big a risk and we have an undrafted FA QB to pin our hopes on!

Harbaugh (and his coaching staff) made the difference in Smith and the SF team. Reid and his staff will do the same for the Chiefs. How can a team only win 2 games when they have six probowl players? Because the coaching staff was incompetent. |

I have a hard time seeing Reid making the transition to MartyBall though. |
