Shocker Clay, shocker.
One of the biggest misnomers of Alex Smith is that he is a "safe qb" who dumps it off a lot. % of passes to hbs is less than the average of the league. His ypa last year was among the best last year. He plays safe and smart with the ball, but that doesn't mean he isn't getting the ball down field.

I'd love for someone to provide some statistical evidence to support that Alex Smith dumps balls off more than the average NFL qb.

Given a similar environment, he probably would be. And in fact, was, for the majority of his career.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle notes via Stats Inc. that only Tom Brady has a higher QB rating against the blitz this season. Smith has completed 18 of 24 passes for 229 yards with two touchdowns for a 132 rating.

This was 2011. I don't know what it was for 2012, but his QB rating was significantly higher in 2012 than it was in 2011..so I imagine that it was the same or better.

2012 / when Alex was blitzed = 126.8 QBR with 8 TDs and 1 INT.

EDIT: though PFF shows that his 2011 was a 97.6 QBR.

That doesn't really mean much when you suck on third down for your entire career.

That is the most consistent thing about Alex Smith over the years.

Team stat. There were many other reasons outside of Alex as to why our 3rd down conversion rate suffered.

Believe what you want to try and lessen your QB, if that makes you feel better, though.

Another stat proving Cassel is who we thought he was. Good riddance. At least Smith isn't part of the lower end. Crawling back in my hole now.

PFF exposed Cassel as a fraud before he even got here. They are MUCH more favorable towards Alex.

Are sacks down; TD passes up; completion percentage higher; QB yardage on the ground better; scoring production up; 3rd down conversion percentage improved; red zone productivity improved, etc.?

Here are some statistical comparisons between the two QBs.

Smith has 8 games and Kaepernick has 4 games where they were the starters and played the entire game, and although the totals are different, the percentages can be compared. The difference between the two QBs is microscopic. It seems Harbaugh’s preference is the only reason Kaepernick is playing QB now that Smith is concussion free, because all of the skills that Kaepernick is supposed to have that are better than Smith seemingly have not been converted into points and productivity.

If Smith is such an amazing QB why did he hit the open FA market 2 years in a row, only to not garner any attention?

In a QB starved league, Alex Smith was on the market 3 consecutive years.

Alex was held accountable for team performance, which is normal for a qb. 2010 he signed a 1 year contract because of the lockout...but note that Harbaugh courted Alex..he could have just let him go.

2011 - everyone knew that Alex wanted to come back to the 9ers. One year is not enough to erase the doubt that was associated with him. Signed a solid (but by no means spectacular) contract with the 9ers for 3 years.

2012 - Still under contract, the 9ers shop Alex because he wants to be a starter and they are committed to Kaepernick. There were a number of teams interested, which is why the Chiefs probably gave up 2 2nd rounders for him.
