Greinke Brawls..breaks collarbone
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...pitch/2076525/
The Los Angeles Dodgers won the game Thursday night against the San Diego Padres, but their pennant hopes certainly took a hit. Dodgers starter Zack Greinke fractured his left collarbone in a bench-clearing brawl during the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Padres at Petco Park, prompting enraged Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp to confront Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin in the clubhouse tunnel after the game. Padres starter Clayton Richard and security guards intervened before another fight ensued. The brawl started when Quentin was hit in the shoulder by Greinke's pitch in the sixth inning. He took several steps towards the mound with his bat, dropped it, and charged Greinke. It was the second time in four years that Greinke hit Quentin, but Quentin was intercepted by Kansas City Royals catcher Miguel Olivo and home-plate umpire Bill Hohn back on April 9, 2009, when Greinke pitched for the Royals and Quentin played for the Chicago White Sox. This time, no one held anyone back, with Greinke, Kemp and Jerry Hairston ejected from the Dodgers, along with Quentin. The biggest losers, of course, were the Dodgers, with Greinke sidelined for an indefinite period. He's scheduled to see Los Angles physician Neal ElAttrache on Friday. Greinke signed a six-year, $147 million free-agent contract during the winter. "My teammate now has a broken f------ collarbone,'' Hairston told reporters. "Excuse my language, but that's unbelievable.'' Said Quentin: "It's unfortunate. It could have been avoided. You can ask Zack about that. "For me, I've been hit by many pitches in my career. I think you guys know that. I can tell you I've never responded in that fashion, so you guys can do your homework on that. For me, the situation is done. That's it.'' Quentin was most infuriated, he told reporters, by what Greinke told him after he was hit. "That was the final straw,'' he said. Kemp, enraged by the incident, met face to face with Quentin in the hallway after the game at Petco Park. He followed Quentin into the parking lot and saying: "We'll see, b----,'' according to the Los Angeles Times. "That's terrible for him to charge the mound like that,'' Kemp told reporters. "I think Carlos Quentin went to Stanford. I heard there's some smart people at Stanford. That wasn't too smart.'' Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Quentin shouldn't be permitted to play another game until Greinke can pitch. "We're in a 2-1 game and on a 3-2 pitch to a guy that I see on the [score]board set a record for the Padres by getting hit, a guy who basically dives into the plate,'' Mattingly said, according to the MLB.com report. "In a 2-1 game, we're trying to hit him, 3-2? "It's just stupid is what it is. He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch. If he plays before Greinke pitches, something is wrong.'' Said Greinke: "The only thing I'm going to say about the whole thing that happened there is I've never hit him on purpose. I never thought of hitting him on purpose.'' Quentin has long been a magnet for pitches. In 2004, he set a minor league record by getting plunked 43 times, and he led the major leagues the past two seasons, getting hit 23 times in 2011 and 17 times last year, even though he played just 86 games. Greinke told reporters he thought Quentin's umbrage in reacting to getting hit by pitches was "a ploy" to intimidate pitchers. "I figured he was trying to intimidate pitchers so they wouldn't throw inside,' he said. The Dodgers and Padres play again Monday, this time, in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium on Jackie Robinson Day. |

He could have kept his cool and let the umpire and the catcher do their job. Greinke is robbing money from the Dodgers now that he got himself hurt out of Pride. You need to watch the Pulp Fiction scene where Marcellus Wallace talks to Butch. Ironically, it was not the best advice to Butch at the time, but it would be useful to any team sports player that gets injured in an unnecessary brawl just because of pride and lack of self-control.

Greinke did absolutely nothing, whatsoever, to cause CQ to rush the mound. CQ was going to rush the mound even if Greinke calmly turned around and said nothing, he even admitted as much. Given that, this is CQ's fault, and no one else's.

If it was unintentional, Grienke could have indicated that instead of taking offense at Quentin's reaction. Grienke could have tipped his cap or turned around and picked up the rosin bag. Now he has a broken collarbone and gets $115,000+ per game to not contribute to his team.

Quentin got hit Tuesday and had to leave the game.
We hit Ethier yesterday Should have been done there. Quentin got hit again yesterday and despite it being a 1 run game, they weren't giving him anything to hit...he's our only weapon. Greinke, to his credit, manned up, threw off his glove, and lowered his shoulder like a man. Maybe not the smartest move, but the two had beef with each other and settled it like ball players do. I'd like to know out of the other 1000 times Quentin has been hit, did he charge the mound? He obviously was provoked enough to do so. This board is clearly biased as they hate the White Sox... |

A former teammate told the press that CQ told him that if Greinke ever hit him again, he'd rush the mound.
He gets hit in a situation where it is clear and obvious that it could not have possibly been intentional, yet he still rushes the mound. CQ had his mind made up about what he'd do if Greinke hit him again long ago.

The game situation makes it clear and obvious. His instantaneous reaction does as well. Only an ignorant fool would think any pitcher would intentionally hit a batter in a situation where the risk of costing your team the game is very high. Hell, he threw 4 sliders in the AB, he's not going to fool around with throwing pitches that are hard in the arm if he's planning on beaning him.

Like hell its not. One-run game with no outs?
Greinke also came back from 2-1 to fill the count and spent several sliders on him, he was clearly and obviously trying to get him out.

Even if he had said that to some teammate long ago, that does not mean that it was not a spontaneous decision. I think the umpire and the catcher would have done more to intervene if Quentin was indicating a premeditated decision. I have seen where a batter will start towards first so that the catcher and umpire think nothing is up and then charge the mound. In this situation Quentin did not do anything like that, he acted like he was considering charging the mound without making any special effort to deke the catcher and umpire into complacency, and that Grienke asked for it by yelling at him. That did not look much different from Mike Sweeney and Jeff Weaver. Sweeney did not make up his mind to charge the mound until Weaver screamed something. If a pitcher hits a batter unintentionally, then why does that pitcher think that they improve the situation by yelling at the batter that just got plunked. That is stupid. If it was an unintentional HBP, the better way to indicate that is to do something other than get an angry look and yell something at the batter.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I was watching this live as it happened on MLB Network. Kemp kept yelling "That's ****ing bullshit!" over and over. Vin Scully goes,
"'That's fertilizer!' says Matt Kemp over and over. 'That's fertilizer!'" Vin Scully rules. |

He owes the Dodgers similar insight in how him getting hurt in an unnecessary brawl can cost the Dodgers their chances at the division and the playoffs. IMO, justice would be Quentin gets the run of the mill charging the mound suspension when it appears to be an unintentional beaning. Greinke gets suspended one start when he is off disabled list. And everybody learn that one reason not to get in unnecessary fights is that you can get injured and not contribute to the team.
