I was thinking about the Brady Bunch the other day.
Supposedly Mike and Carol Brady were both widowed before they met and married. How common is it for a couple of under-35 people to meet as a widow and widower? Is it possible that they met, fell in love, had an affair, and then killed each other's spouses for the insurance money? That would help explain the nice big house and the maid.

It was never specified on the show whether Carol was a divorcee or a widow, although she did say in the pilot before the wedding that she thought she could never be happy again, or something like that.

The background, though, is that Sherwood Schwartz wanted her to be a divorcee, but ABC didn't want that specified.

No, the battle was both were written as divorced, and ABC forced the compromise that Mike was a widower and Carol was a divorcee.

It was Greg and Carol acting together. Greg and Carol fell in love with each other and were caught getting it on by the original mrs. Brady, in Greg's bunk bed. Greg's mom went histerical and immediately called Carol's first husband. That night after Carol returned home full of gin, her husband pulled a knife on her and she was forced to shoot him with her derringer.
There was then no choice left, but to kill Mrs. Brady, because she would know that Carol had murdered her husband. So, Greg and Carol offed Greg's mom and started using Mike as a front for their secret love affair.
