**The Official 2008 Beijing Olympics Thread**
Here it is! Your thread to talk about anything and everything 2008 Summer Olympics! (Except politics. Lets please try and keep this strictly to the sporting events)
Looks like Soccer started yesterday officially. China is 13 hours ahead of Central time. So most of the live coverage will be middle of the night. Alot of NBC's primetime coverage will be tape delayed. Link to Yahoos Olympic site: http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/bei...J7PK_KsSMSv5V4 |

I was following the women's sabre for a while, and it just broke till tomorrow morning. 3 american women went into the field of 32, all 3 are in the quarter finals with some russian chick. USA is guaranteed at least 2 medals and maybe a sweep.

OK night owls, your in luck. Looks like most of the live coverage is going to be on late at night due to the time difference. Coverage starts at 1am on USA, CNBC, NBC etc..

Judo update
Women's extra lightweight: our only entrant had bad luck and drew the defending world champion in the first round. She's now out, so we no longer care about that event. Men's Extra lightweight: Our only entrant was also matched up with a judo God from Japan, but somehow he won. He now has to fight some dude from Venezuela, match scheduled to begin very soon.

Ruslan Kishmakhov has a gait eerily similar to Chris Benoit's.

I've done some research in Judo scoring. Its really complicated, but I kinda like it, they set this sport up well, its really a "fight or go home" type of sport. If you have a small lead you cant screw around playing defense or the judges start awarding the other guy points for stalling.
Basically, the goal is to take your guy, throw him, and lay him the f*** out on the mat cold. Period. Someone can be WAY ahead in points, but if the other dude pulls off a perfect throw its like a headshot. Match over, score irrelevant, you win. Scoring: Ippon (really awesome hard throw, referee signals with arm straight in the air). Worth 1,000 points, match over, you win. Waza-aris (really good throw, but not quite an ippon, ref arm at shoulder height). Worth 100 points, match is over if you do this twice. Yuko (decent throw, but not all that great, ref points arm at 45 degrees) worth 10 points for tiebreaker if the match doesnt end early. Koka (scrappy little judo move, better than "meh", ref makes a stop-sign type of signal) worth 1 point for tiebreakers if the match doesnt end early. Then I guess the opponent can be awarded points if you are screwing around and not fighting.

You must be watching a tape delay on tv? The live matches are over to the semis, and dont resume till the morning. All 3 american girls are still in it, so USA will get 2 or 3 medals out of it.

I really like it. All the footwork and the poking and the yelling.
