Sheldon Richardson going to USC

Sheldon Richardson reneges, commits to USC

BY VAHE GREGORIAN Posted: Thursday, November 11, 2010 2:41 pm

Prized Mizzou football recruit Sheldon Richardson said Thursday he has changed his commitment from MU to Southern California.

Richardson, from Gateway Tech, has spent the last two falls at College of the Sequoias in California after failing to qualify academically at Mizzou. He sat out all but two games this season with a wrist injury that he says he now has recovered from and did not require surgery.

Although Richardson attended MU's Oct. 23 win over then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma and said "it felt like home," he committed to USC last weekend.

The main reason, he said, was his belief that USC and well-respected defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would best prepare him for a transition to the NFL after just one season.

He said the fact USC won't be eligible for a bowl next year because of NCAA sanctions didn't bother him.

Richardson, considered a 5-star recruit out of high school, said he still plans to take other recruiting visits, most likely to Miami, California and Arizona State.

He was vague when asked whether he had told MU of his decision yet.

"Uh, back and forth. I'm going to call them later," he said. "It's kind of hard to tell them I'm not going there no more. Or I think I'm not going no more."

Asked if that meant there still was wiggle room in his decision-making, he said, "A little wiggle room."

Richardson doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed. Kiffin probably sold him on the Hollywood scene. Mizzou will be fine without him.

Hollywood scene?

The Hollywood scene has absolutely NOTHING to do with 19 and 20 year old football players.

If he was sold on any "scene", it was Manhattan Beach, were a large contingent of USC students live and "play".

Well we know he wasn't sold on good defense and bowl games.

I'm sure that Monte Kiffen played a role in his decision

This kid must have a ****load of talent if he thinks he'll walk onto the USC campus, kick ass and be chosen as a high first rounder in 2012.

I'm surprised he was able to get into college at all.. Don't you have to have a minimum grade/score to get into college?

Or he's just stupid.

OU's point guard Tommy Mason-Griffin did the same thing last year. Lot of talent but not enough to be 1 and done.. Stopped going to class in the spring and declared for the draft, only to not be drafted at all...

He's in JUCO because he could not qualify out of high school, and rumors have been going around that his JUCO studies have not been going great.

Honestly I'm surprisingly not that upset with his decommit (although I think the odds are decent that he recommits to Mizzou....he's a total headcase). Football isn't like basketball where one recruit can make or break a season.

And if SR is going into D1 football with the idea that he will play only one year and bolt to the NFL, he could wind up being a huge problem if he doesn't start immediately, we lose a couple games, he gets hurt, etc.

I definitely don't wish him luck though. I think it's BS when kids back out of solid commitments at the very end.
