Derek Carr should easily beat six weeks, could return in two

David Carr’s back injury has been confirmed as a transverse fracture, after all.

The injury is what we said was the most likely possibility in our post immediately after the Raiders quarterback left Sunday’s game. Following game, Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said Carr had back spasms.

Despite the apparent discrepancy, the Raiders medical staff did not err, and Del Rio did not lie.

Stadium X-rays don’t detect all transverse process fractures or even all subtle fractures.

See Tony Romo in 2014. The Cowboys QB was allowed to finish a Monday night game, and days later it was discovered/announced he had a transverse fracture based on further testing.

It is common for X-rays to miss subtle fractures. That is the reason for a follow-up MRI.

Any spine fracture sounds bad, but there is good news here.

Carr’s season is not over, and the Raiders aren't rushing him back.

The timeline the team gave of 2-6 weeks is generous. I am confident Carr will beat the six-week outer edge.

It would be very difficult for him to play next week. But Romo flew to London and played two weeks after his transverse fracture. Cam Newton in the same season played in two weeks after his transverse process fracture from a rollover car accident.

Carr is likely to do the same and try to play missing only one game.

Yes, it is a spine fracture. But this is an avulsion (pulled off) non-structural small wing of bone. It has no risk for paralysis or spinal cord injury. In fact, the bone doesn’t even need to heal to return to play.


This injury does cause significant pain and spasm, but it is truly a pain tolerance and functional issue.

Carr can return when he feels up to it.

The faid has shit for depth. The Chiefs were able to find Kareem Hunt in the draft while Chokeland relied on an over the hill Lynch. One of the many reasons why the Chiefs are far and away a better run organization.
