**** Official Tornado Thread of 2008 *****

Well here we are only 7 days into the New Year and Tornado sirens going off since 5:45 pm . I guess 2 twisters touched down in Monett. Kind of wild having the tornados this early. Everyone in the area be safe.

Guess we are in Warnings till 10:00 pm. Got to love the SW Missouri Weather.

Glad to hear ..... looks like the next wave may go a little south of us. Had 3 families in the neighbor in our basement tonight. Funnel went over the house appearently but never touched down.

Just caught the tail end of the info but 6 are injured and 1 death in these storms. Not sure if this was the Strafford area or the Monett area.

Looks like we may have 1 or two more waves tonight yet but who knows. Stay alert and safe everyone.

Hope everyone is ok. I take it that was the same storm that hit NE Springfield and Strafford.

According to the radar I just saw you will be getting hammered for another hour at least. It is just missing Tulsa to the south but has a dead eye sight on Springfield.

Be safe, guys.

I'm trying to keep my eye on the area, my best man, his wife, and 4 day old son live in Ozark.

Please keep us posted if you can.

Dang, that's one of the nastiest line of storms I've seen in a long time...

Here's the Storm Prediction Center's discussion on the issue:

Quote:
MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0022
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1004 PM CST MON JAN 07 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN OK...NWRN AR...SWRN THROUGH NERN MO AND WRN IL

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 5...

VALID 080404Z - 080530Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 5 CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR A FEW TORNADOES...SOME OF WHICH COULD BE STRONG...WILL PERSIST THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING INTO THE OVERNIGHT. IN ADDITION...LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS COULD ACCOMPANY THE STRONGER STORMS.

A LINE OF SCATTERED STORMS WILL PERSIST WITHIN ZONE OF LOW LEVEL CONFLUENCE AND ASCENT ALONG THE STRONG LOW LEVEL JET AXIS FROM NE OK THROUGH SW AND NE MO. THE LINE IS PARALLEL TO THE UPPER FLOW AND IS MOVING VERY LITTLE...WHILE THE INDIVIDUAL CELLS ARE MOVING NEWD AT ABOUT 35-40 MPH RESULTING IN TRAINING CELLS AND LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL. THIS ACTIVITY BEEN DEVELOPING WITHIN RELATIVELY MODEST DEEP LAYER FORCING...AND THIS HAS PROMOTED MAINLY DISCRETE STRUCTURES. HOWEVER...STORM COVERAGE HAS GRADUALLY BEEN INCREASING AS DEEPER ASCENT ATTENDING SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER OK ADVANCES EWD. LARGE LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS WILL PERSIST ALONG THE LOW LEVEL JET AXIS AND MAINTAIN A THREAT FOR SUPERCELLS WITH LOW LEVEL MESOCYCLONES AND TORNADOES THIS EVENING INTO THE OVERNIGHT.

Now to put it into english: basically you all are in an area of a dang nice boundary that's very conducive to being a storm making machine. You have a whole bunch of moisture fuleing the suckers with a good amount of rotation potential.

Most storm systems rely upon solar heating to maintain structures like this, but you sometimes get just the right set up that the storms don't weaken that much after the sun goes down.

However, one thing that it looks like may be developing is a more linear structure that will sap some of the rotational energy from the cells... but you can still get a lot of wind, hail, rain, etc.

So yeah, if you're in this line, you're in for a rough night one way or the other: hang on.

I've never been able to verify it, but I had a friend in the meteorology department at OU who was born on January 16th; he said that's the only day without a tornado ON RECORD. We always attributed it to our lack of success storm chasing with him, but I digress. So unless we're talking January 16th, there's always a chance...
