History Channel to remake "Roots"
http://variety.com/2013/tv/news/hist...ts-1200798586/
Variety has confirmed that History Channel will be remaking the 1977 miniseries after nabbing the rights to the original from Mark Wolper, son of late “Roots” exec producer David L. Wolper, along with the rights to the 1976 novel “Roots: The Saga of an American Family.” Deadline was first to break the news. “Roots” will be transformed into an eight-hour miniseries for History, with Mark Wolper exec producing. Project is said to draw from the book and 1977 mini, while offering a contemporary perspective. “Roots” debuted on ABC in January 1977, and earned dozens of Emmy noms, along with nine wins. The finale of the original “Roots” mini still ranks as the third highest-rated TV broadcast, per Nielsen ratings, with 100 million viewers. |

I shudder to think of what the 'contemporary perspective' might be.

Part of what made Roots great was that it was supposedly a story told to him by his grandmother. When it turned out it was just another screenplay, I was disappointed. What a crock. |

Yay, can't wait for yet another serving of white guilt, for which I had absolutely nothing to do with. Even cooler, I have no chance of beating any black candidate for college, any government job at any level, and will always be the first to be fired no matter what my job performance when a black man's job can be saved instead (actually happened). USA USA USA!

Because in the USA I live in black folks don't monopolize academia, the government, or the private working sector. If you keep getting fired, can't get into college, or get a government job, the problem is probably you. |

Lawrence of Arabia wasn't historically accurate, but I wouldn't want to see that remade, either. |

I see it more of-This is all that Hollywood can offer?
Someone wants to make a movie/album etc. They COPY successful things in the past-make changes they think are good. The only reason it makes money is because we want to see how it is different-not that it is good. There is NO ORIGINALITY in music and Hollywood any more

He has a point, though, especially when you consider things like of the 10 highest grossing films last year, 9 were sequels, and the 10th was a book adaptation.
