Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Although I don't necessarily like the way you are framing your argument, I do agree with you that the correct course of action is most definitely NOT to quit.

The Martin crucifiers are definitely in the wrong. Incognito is the villain here.

I, however, do not believe that quitting/running away should be viewed as noble or correct. I understand why Martin did it. Martin must have felt there was no other course of action. A lack of resolve/determination/resiliency

Incognito is just one of those people you fire because he's toxic. That doesn't make this a story.

Honestly, if the N-word hadn't appeared in those voicemails, this would have been a minor story, if a story at all.

Especially if the one he should of gone to were behind it. Hard to go to your superiors about a problem at work if your superiors side with the person in question

Who is trying to make Martin the problem? I haven't really seen much of that at all. Sure there were people calling him a pussy early on, but alot of that seems to have subsided or at least taken on a tone of "both sides were wrong".

That said, without knowing more about what went on, it's way too early to determine that Martin made the right decisions at every point along the path.

Yep. If the "right" race angle wasn't present (white on black) this would not be much of a story. It wouldn't be much of a story if the angle was black on white either.

Everyone has their breaking point. Martin's may be significantly lower than that of the average NFL player. Is he a pussy for it? Yeah, he probably is in the minds of many.

But the reality is, these guys doing the hazing have to recognize where "all in good fun" goes beyond fun. So Martin is a pussy that can't take a joke? Then back the **** off and leave him alone.

True. I also feel Martin KNOWS that he can make a hell of a lot more $$$ when he sues the NFL / Dolphins over this, then he could playing football. He is a very smart individual. He's in over his head in every way in the NFL and he knows it. In a court of law, he's not.
