Alex is a consistent QB in this league. He is not elite but few are. Odds of landing an elite signal caller
are very slim. Wake the **** up and accept the fact that we will start a good QB under center for the next 6 years at Arrowhead. Would you be happy with Foles right now? Most in this thread probably wouldn't and you're dumb. |

I'd kind of like to see him pull a victory out for the Chiefs first before I'd give him an extension.

I would give him a 2 yr extension, draft another QB, and let them fight it out.
I'm happy with Alex's performance

Everybody seems to forget that Alex is Andy Reid's hand picked leader. Andy is totally in love with Alex and has been for years. After seeing the Chiefs get double digit wins the season after winning only 2 games with Alex as the man orchestrating the turnaround what do you think Andy will do about an extension. Just judging his performance on the first 13 games Alex deserves an extension and if he wins playoff games his bounty will increase. People forget real fast how lousy this team has been the last 10 years. Extending Alex will help the team move forward and keep us at the top of the league for many years to come. Have faith in our new leadership, the dark ages are over.

It really doesn't matter what we think.
He's going to get an extension and given that he's been part of an historic turnaround, it will likely be for a lot longer than anybody wants, even the people that really like him. |

I'm with you there. But what about this scenario. Alex Smith plays very well and does everything possible to help the team win (ala Charger game) and the defense doesn't play well and we lose to one of those teams. What then?

The Chiefs don't HAVE to extend Smith this season. They have another year of control. Get through the playoffs, see how things work out, see how the draft and FA work out. Things I'd want to see before being OK with giving Smith an extension: 1) Chiefs need to win final 3 games of regular season. 2) Chiefs need to beat an elite team at some point this year, though they probably don't have another chance until the playoffs (Colts are not elite right now... Chargers are more of a fringe playoff team) 3) Alex Smith needs to play at an extremely high level and be a big part of the reason they win that playoff game. (I.E., Chiefs win 28-24 because the defense plays at an epic level and scores two TDs, not good enough). Smith is a big upgrade from Matt Cassel and is at least a credible NFL starter, but he really has been a very average, middle-of-the-pack starter. 60 percent completion, 6.2 YPA (worst rate in the league for a starting QB) and a QB rating in the mid-80s is not enough to warrant an extension, bad receivers or no. He's done nothing to disprove claims he is somewhere between the 15th and 25th best starting QB option in the league. I wouldn't be in a rush to extend him until he does.
