No, your goals aren't any 'loftier' than the folks that are pleased about an 11+ win season. We just recognize that sometimes reality intervenes and there's a pretty scarce supply of HoF quarterbacks available. We realize that only one team wins the SB every year and many others don't for reasons that have nothing to do with their Qb.

It's haughty bullshit. You believe yourselves to be more critical fans because 'we demand excellence', as though the rest of us aren't seeking the same. We'll always want the best QB we can get. The problem is that many of you just make the same wails every year "WE NEED A FRANCHISE QB!!!!" as though there's an infinite supply of them and/or everyone isn't out there trying to get one. It's a zero sum league where everyone is ruthlessly trying to beat everyone else. It's not as simple as just strolling to the QBMart and grabbing Andrew Luck.

You can be happy to have Alex Smith without being content in having an above average QB. You can enjoy winning 10-13 games in a season and still be pissed off that we didn't win a SB.

These are not the mutually exclusive ideas you so constantly paint them as in order to create an easy argument.
Excellent!

If the guy is good enough to win 11+ games, why is it unrealistic to expect at least a playoff victory?

Good conversation. Rare.

One positive for me is that Alex Smith appears to be improving as the season progresses. I remember when Cassel regressed at the end of 2010. Hopefully that continues.

I almost ignored your post and just laughed it off as just another attention whoring dumb ass post. But, like a moth to flame, I couldn't ignore your post. Trent Green was in no was, shape, or form comparable to the likes of Cassel, Bono, or Grbac. Unlike the three you compared him to, he didn't have the benefit of riding the coattail of a solid to great defense. He won games in SPITE of one of the worst defenses KC ever fielded, not the other way around. He did everything you could have asked of him, yet the defense couldn't beat their way out of a wet paper bag.

What kills me is that they act like even Alex Smiths grow on trees...they don't.
Guys who can consistently win and not **** up like him are totally worth what we payed.
Watch. Someone is going to trade a high 2nd or even a first for Cousins. QBs who can come into a 2-14 team and win 12 games can't be had for song.
And no matter what you thought of Smith he has proven that is what he is.

I don't think that's unrealistic at all.

Of course, if we go to the playoffs and lose it's going to be cast here as Smith not being good enough - even if it's something like the recent losses were, where the defense collapses.

Because expecting anything in a game where 250 lb men are throwing themselves at each other and throwing/catching an oblong object is a recipe for disappointment.

This is a random-ass game. Great players go entire careers without winning championships. Mediocre players fall ass-backwards into multiple championship teams.

The greatest QBs in NFL history of all lost playoff games you would've 'expected' them to win.

Give me a 16 game season to determine his skill level. Give me 5 seasons of sustained performance to see if it's repeatable. That's what tells me what I need to know about how well a guy does his job. The outcome of a single game in a team sport isn't dispositive.

Some folks are perfectly content with winning a bunch of regular season games, but some have loftier goals, and realize that you're not guaranteed this opportunity every year.

I don't think it's unfair to expect the QB of a team that started 9-0, who we spent two R2 picks on - one of them as high as you can get - to win a single playoff game.
My question to you or anyone else is lets just say in the 1st playoff game we see a repeat of the Chargers game. Alex throws a late Td to give us the lead and the D blows it. Do we put that on Alex?

My judgement on Alex won't just be if the Chiefs are winners or losers in their first playoff game this year it will be how Alex plays. If he plays well and they lose because of defense like they did the Chargers game at Arrowhead I'm not going to be upset at all at Alex. Football is a team game. I won't judge Alex by the mistakes of others. Just won't do it. But I will say if the Chiefs are going to win in the playoffs Alex is going to have to play well. There's no question about that.

That's the same treatment every other QB gets on this board, why not Alex?

I'm glad I previewed my post, I was typing up a similar response.

Again, it's not black and white. Like we discussed before, it's why you can't use the whole "24-4-1" thing to prop up a QB as the end all be all.

Theres just so many extenuating factors.
