KC Star expects Commings to play FS

The Kansas City Star expects CB Sanders Commings to compete for the Chiefs' starting free safety job in 2014.

With Kendrick Lewis a free agent this offseason, Commings is expected to be moved to safety opposite Eric Berry. A fifth-round pick, he spent the majority of his rookie year on short-term I.R., finishing with just three defensive snaps. The Chiefs run a lot of single-high safety looks under DC Bob Sutton, so Commings could be a strong fit as a former cornerback. Kansas City also figures to bring in competition through the draft or free agency.

I wouldn't even count on the kid making the roster. I'm not sure what everybody sees in him. He might have the tools, but he is a long way away from starting in this league.

If there was one position I would throw some money around in, it's at safety.

As far as I'm concerned, we have Eric Berry and that's it at safety.

That's a nice little group of players that could play big roles on the defense next year that I'm looking forward to.

Commings isn't on that list, but I'm hoping to be proven wrong.

The Chiefs need to be making a push NOW to bring in Abdullah.

Half the teams in the NFL need safeties more desperately than we do, and there is a shitty draft class of safeties coming in.

The Chiefs need to re-sign Abdullah as soon as humanly possible -- he's going to get priced out of our range if he hits the free market.

All halfway decent safeties will.

The Chiefs should bring Abdullah back, and draft a couple safeties for developmental talent.

I bet Berry/Abdullah/Commings/a mid-round pick is good enough to succeed as long as we make an important upgrade at the other DE position and don't just rely on Allen Bailey.

But you use your shoulder near-constantly at safety.

We should head into this offseason treating him as quality depth, and provide even more depth behind him.

We need five safeties heading into this offseason.

Right now, we have two: Berry and Commings. With Ron Parker, who's really more of a corner.

Bring back Abdullah if at all possible. Draft two more safeties. See if you can land MacDougald back from the Bucs.

Powe and Catapano are going to play big roles but Commings, a 5th rounder out of Georgia, might not make the roster?

Our rookie class generally should be thought to include Commings and Kelce.

Nico played some this year, however, and just didn't look the part.

He needs another year of development before he lands time. This team needs to bring Jordan back.

Ron Parker impressed me with the snaps he got at CB.

I'm not suggesting we put him into the starting lineup or anything based on his ability to come in on corner blitzes and play special teams, but I think it's time to start looking to people like him instead of Dunta when we need fill-ins for nickel and dime packages.

At any rate, we could definitely use him at CB if we're not going to overhaul that position.

I think that shoulder is gonna really hinder the guy and that it may never get back to full strength. Those other guys have actually showed something...Commings may never get a chance to do so unless that shoulder gets/stays healthy which has been an ongoing issue for the kid.
