Would you report coworker theft?

This guy Ive been working with for the last couple years has been robbing my company blind lately, and does it right in front of me. It started out as just a couple < $10 items here and there, but recently Ive been noticing him taking much higher priced ($20+) things out to his car almost every day. Ive told him before he better stop before he gets caught but he just laughs and says something like "Why are you gonna rat on me?"

This guy isn't a really close friend or anything, but I do open with him every morning and he has been out to my house for cookouts a few times...not for a couple years though.

Its really bothering me, I don't want to be a rat but at the same time this shit is wrong and while I cant stand my current boss I do like the owner and his family. Ive told this guy more than once not to do it in front of me but he doesn't listen.

Should I say something to the owner or live by the rule "snitches get stitches"? He would certainly get fired and he has a wife who cant work and three kids at home so that would bother me as much or more than his stealing. And even if I did say something I don't know how to go about it...I cant do it anonymously because I'm the only one there in the mornings with him so they would know it was from me.

In a tough spot here.

- The accounting/inventory morons that don't understand small business. I especially like the chiming in with "hire me and I'll fix er up", what the owner has is essentially a $2500 per year problem ($10X5daysX50weeks) at this point. So your suggestion is to implement inventory tracking and pay the dumbass accountant to research all this shit and the owner ends up with a still unsolvable $2500 problem and then a minimum $10-20K bill that probably doesn't even really affect his business. Then he has to pay for the software and someone to run it all for what? Brilliant!

One question for the OP, if the owner saw and knew everything regarding all of your actions would he fire you immediately?
My problem with this is I do not what type of stuff he is stealing. It could be much higher. From my experience he is not the only person stealing.

As for the software, if it is mom and pop, it could be handle with just excel tracking on spot checks on random skus. The thing I would be worried about the most by them not checking is the deliveries. Companies are notorious for missing boxes and having them received in full, also drivers stealing shit. If they are not noting this amount missing, there is a bigger problem.

Easiest way to increase profit is simple things. I managed a warehouse, I was amazed by some of the stunts/tricks people would use to steal.

But you might be right, if the owner does not notice or want cameras, he probably does not care enough. Or thinks everyone underneath him is looking out for him.

MTG, so does this mean your direct supervisor is his son?

IIRC, MTG's ex never got a train run on her but she was, at one point, dating someone distinctly younger than herself and MTG which caused the latter some ire which he espoused here on this fair forum.

MTG has done a fantastic job of documenting his life's misery on this forum.

I don't care enough to link his threads about his divorce/custody battle/whatever else; but the dude has no problem consulting CP on all of life's most important matters.

I just don't get it. Make your own calls. This place is most often not the solution for serious inquiries and explanations, true friendships aside.

Thanks for the run down, never really noticed him that much. This site has grown too large with too many username changes, there was a time I knew almost every fairly active poster. Now I see names with 10k+ posts that I can't remember a single thing about.

You don't think "go die in an aids fire " counts as a serious explanation?

I'm beginning to think he is either a wimp that's afraid to get beat up by the thief or an attention whore. I wasn't a supervisor, but when freight was delivered, I had to sign for it. I looked over everything until I did. I'm thinking attention whore.
