Officially, Kent State running back Dri Archer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.26 seconds. Unofficially, he was even faster.
Per a league source, one scout timed Archer at 4.18 seconds in the 40. While hardly scientific, the hand-timed result compares favorably with some of the legendary times generated before partial electronic timing was implemented in 2000. The start of the run is measured by hand; the conclusion is measured electronically. Based on the old hand-timed numbers, the only players faster than Archer were Bo Jackson (4.12), running back Michael Bennett (4.13), Darrell Green (4.15), and Ahman Green (4.17). Regardless of the specifics, Archer runs very fast. And while that’s one just piece of a much broader and convoluted puzzle, it’s always good to run very fast, especially for a running back. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-4-18-seconds/ |

For those watching who was the best looking "phat back" of the bunch?
I have my own favorite (too high for us to draft) but I'd like to hear the crowd reactions...

Aaron Donald’s also opening eyes with his 40
Jadeveon Clowney isn’t the only physical freak among the defensive linemen working out today at the Scouting Combine. Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald just ran his first 40-yard dash in an unofficial 4.65 seconds. At 285 pounds. Even when that one’s inevitably rounded down a bit, that’s still stretching the laws of physics. When you multiply mass times acceleration, it will make Donald a high pick anyway. But the short-area acceleration which is so vital for defensive linemen is where you get a real sense of Donald’s burst. His 10-yard split was 1.59 seconds, a hair behind Clowney’s 1.56, for a guy carrying an extra 20 pounds. That is going to earn Donald a lot of comparisons to players such as Bengals All-Pro Geno Atkins, and guarantee that unlike Atkins, he won’t have to wait until the fourth round. |

Disappointed that Tuitt didn't get a chance to run through the drills, and the 40, at the combine....but he did put up 31 reps. That's one positive. Plus he's reportedly down to around 305 lbs.

pretty cool: See how University of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney fared in the 40-yard dash compared to Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Carolina Panthers Cam Newton and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. 21.7 MPH

Michael Sam disappoints in the 40
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 24, 2014, 11:59 AM EST michaelsam AP As the most-watched man at the Scouting Combine, former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam aced the early portion of the test, coming across as smart, thoughtful and focused on football when he met the media. But in his workouts, Sam hasn’t been as impressive. Sam, who will be the NFL’s first openly gay player if he makes it to the league, turned in a disappointing 40-yard dash on Monday after turning in a disappointing bench press on Sunday. NFL Network timed Sam at 4.79 seconds and 4.84 seconds in his two 40-yard dash attempts. That’s not a good showing for a 261-pound defensive end. Several bigger defensive ends have run faster, and some defensive tackles are faster, too. And that comes on the heels of yesterday’s performance in the bench press in which Sam managed just 17 repetitions of 225 pounds. That was the second-worst showing among defensive linemen, and plenty of non-linemen (including seven wide receivers) did better than that as well. If you’re not strong and you’re not fast, that’s not a good combination. By coming out before the Combine, Sam showed that he’s a brave, inspirational young man. What Sam hasn’t shown at the Combine is that he’s a good enough athlete to succeed in the NFL. |

Clowney official 40 time = 4.53. The 5-yr average of wide receivers at the combine is 4.54. WRs average 202 lbs. Clowney checked in at 266 lbs
