So that great 08' draft class won 0 playoff games and 3 of the better players from that draft are no longer on the team. Thanks Pioli.

We all freaked the **** out (rightfully so) when Tyson Jackson was taken at 3rd overall.

So... a 3-4 DE is a reach at third overall (Jackson) but is the smart move at first overall (Richardson)?
Yes, because they're different players and in different philosophies.

3-4 DEs are extremely valuable. Just not a 5-technique, especially ones who everyone knew was nowhere close to Richard Seymour level.

Same goes for Fisher playing at a probowl level. But again, I'm not talking about how they did on the field. This entire argument is about whether or not it is fundamentally stupid to draft an OT at first overall. I am saying that drafting Eric Fisher is in no way more stupid than drafting Sheldon Richardson PURELY BASED ON POSITION.

Fisher was widely regarded as just as good of a prospect as Richardson. Across the board, people thought he would be successful.

So, you have two guys, each projected to succeed at the next level. One is an OT, and the other a 3-4 DE. I don't see any reason why one of those picks is bad and the other good.

Again, it's not like anyone knew that Richardson was going to blow up and Fisher would struggle. Of course, they get paid extremely well to make those decisions. But at the end of the day, clearly it's just ****ing hard to really project success in the NFL.

Which is ****ing stupid.

Other teams are drafting QB's and playmakers. Players you can build a franchise around.

KC loves us some OL/DL...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Dude, I'm actually with you.

Go back and look at the draft threads. I was crying for us to draft a QB, even after the Alex trade. I am so terrified we are going to spend our first rounder this year on another ****ing lineman, because derp a derp trenches.

This team is missing skill at the skill position. If anything, I suppose it's best to be pissed off that we didn't go after Tayvon Austin.

Even after we signed Devito? I saw Richardson as a top talent physically but not the type of character risk you want to take at #1 overall.

Tell me how well that has worked out for the Lions?

Good teams don't draft the skills positions in the top 5 unless they are:

1. Completely set along their OT and DL.

2. That skills player is a once in a generation-type talent. (Calvin Johnson)

3. The skills players available are clearly superior in talent to the OT or DL player available.

I think a pass rusher who can play nearly every technique on the line is a playmaker, which is why I thought Sheldon would be an excellent addition.

That's entirely subjective though.

Hindsight is 20/20. No one saw Richardson as a "sure thing" 3-4 DE and a top three pick at the time. Maybe some wanted to trade back and take him but, that's almost a pipe dream with the #1 pick.
