I was being a tad hyperbolic/ranty, but buffets, certainly the cheap ones, which is one of the attributes people are touting, do have inordinately more starches than an al a carte menu does.

It's economics, get you full fast and cheap.

Has anyone eaten at Kansas City's Ameristar Casino buffet? It looks pretty good from a distance, but it's kind of pricey so I've never eaten there.

BTW, we have an African Amercan buffet here that is only open on weekends. BBQ and Soul Food, all family recipes. They put it on your plate, but it's still a line of dishes and all you can eat. Freaking awesome eats.

Bob Dole has never gone back for seconds because the firsts are HUGE.

Not even clear what the name is. They haven't spent money on a sign. The 2 families running it have regular day jobs and just enjoy cooking for folks.

Yep, that's about right.

Plastic rings with giant plastic rubys, etc.

each kid could take a handful home.

There are only a few places to get truly good to great buffets:
  • Most newer Las Vegas casinos
  • Indian Buffets in places like Silicon Valley, Wash DC, and New York
  • Korean/Japanese style with sushi in places like Silicon Valley, Wash DC, and New York, very different and much better than Chinese
  • Many upscale Country Club Golf Courses

I've never seen a high quality buffet outside of these four types and don't confuse QUANTITY over QUALITY!
Indian Buffets, now there I WILL 'fill up' on rice.

Saffron and cardamon infused basmati.

Or Kheer, the rice pudding dessert they have.

I'll even 'fill up' on bread, when it's nan and there's mango and/or mint chutney around.

But then their entrees/offerings are relatively healthy fare.

The last "buffet" that made me say "WHOA" was the one in the Diamond Club behind home plate at the Royals games. They have an actual top notch buffet for rich ****s that is un-be-lievable.

I've been lucky enough to enjoy that three or four times in my life.

A buffet for rich people? What do they use for plates, the breasts of a 26 year old supermodel virgin?
