Dumb idea of the day: Let Alex Smith play out his contract
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2014/4...t-his-contract
A year ago I suggested that Alex Smith should be extended because the price would never be lower. Obviously 99% of the forum was against me, but the deal I suggested would be a bargain today. Now paid writers are literally suggesting to let Alex play it out when there is no chance that the Chiefs could match free agent offers for him. Their defense is that he could get hurt. Wow, and if he gets hurt, who plays QB? Chiefs are screwed either way Best case scenario if we don't extend Alex soon is the franchise tag and that means massively overpaying for another key position |

Who's he comparable to? Rivers? Cutler? Stafford? Romo? Flacco? Ryan? Cassel?
Would you take way less than the market would pay for your job? I wouldn't... Paying a QB is what you have to do, and what they get paid is a crazy amount of money. Hell, Kaperkick stinks and he wants $18,000,000 per. |

Understand what you are saying.
At the same time, Smith and his offensive cohorts were getting to know each other last season, and over the last 7 games of the season he was performing at that rate... with basically the same cast he will have next season. Can he sustain that? That is the multi-million dollar question. |

Most likely he's a 3500/30/10 guy, which is pretty damn good. |

Alex showed me everything I need to see. 5-6 year deal. But if they don't build that Oline he'll be wasted.

I can't remember which rumor from which poster said this, but in the negotiations apparently Alex doesn't want a Cutler or a Kaepernick-level of contract. He wants to be paid and paid well, but he doesn't want to push the team into a position where they suffer to acquire other players.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if he signs a reasonable extension where the guaranteed money is under $30 million. Something like 5 years $65 million with $25 million guaranteed. |

It's the biggest reason you go out and get a guy like him. Good enough to win, not good enough to destroy your cap. |

This would be really stupid to do. Especially after the investment in getting him here.
Alex is not average. $20 mil a year average is the going rate for a teams franchise QB anymore.

Yeah I am sure that most fans would.
I still think his contract will be closer to 6 yrs. 100 mil with 25 mil guaranteed.

Second half of the season the players were more comfortable with each other, they knew they were going to have to put up bigger numbers against the teams with higher powered offenses so Reid took the reins off - and the offense performed really well. However, while we certainly were up against higher powered offenses, our offense was playing against arguably weaker defenses than the first half of the season. Tough to predict how much we can take from that either. Next year we will be playing a number of teams that are balanced with good offenses and good defenses. Bad news: All the "team-building" done on the O line last year is out the window with over half of the positions being played by new players this year. We are starting over from square one when it comes to a unit that is used to playing together and building that trust. This alone could be disastrous as everything the offense is able to do hinges on the line. We so far have not added a legitimate #2 WR to go with our current #2 (quality) WR in Bowe. Good news: Second year with the same OC coordinator and offensive scheme for Smith (only the 2nd time in his career for that). Second year in the same system for the offense. Second year as an NFL player for Fisher and our other 2013 draftees that figure to see more playing time this year. Kelce will be healthy and may provide a spark and an additional playmaker we didn't have last year. And lastly, the draft hasn't occurred and while we are down a 2nd, the draft is deep and figures to have impact players in later rounds, we may find a WR in there that can add to our arsenal. Stranger things have happened. |
