VARSITY
This guy built his own RV. Check it out.

It's a long article, so you probably should go to the link. But imagine an RV designed and built by a guy with lots of money and a desire to go anywhere, and who owns a company referred to as a "military-industrial toy shop".

The article meanders about without talking about the RV for quite a while, and it's not detailed enough at all, but it's still worth checking out. I like the fact that it can dispatch drones, for example.

And gearing

Dude. Almost all diesels are 6 cylinders. The 450 HP in our truck is 6 cylinders. They are big ****ing cylinders but there are only 6. All my tractors have 6.

Diesels are different dude.

To a great extent, it probably depends on what you're using it for. In terms of traditional vehicle performance, it seems bad. But I guess if you're going to use it to go completely offroad out into the extreme wilderness, hunker down, enjoy life, and view hyena or polar bears or puffins at night, then it might be really good.
Eh. Trailers have trouble going in real rough country. Just too much dead weight to get hung up. I don't think you're getting through anything real rough, but I could be wrong. Hell I live in the flatlands. I could peel out across country for quite a ways here in a honda and not have to much trouble.

And I gotta say, it seems like the old guy would be a hoot to hang around with...

"During his tenure at the company, Ferren created the Disney Fellows program, which brought in technologists, engineers, and even astronauts to work as in-house advisers. One of his first hires was Danny Hillis, a pioneer in the field of parallel supercomputing; the two hit it off, and in 2000 they left Disney to start Applied Minds.

The company quickly acquired a reputation as a sort of military-industrial toy shop. Visit its five-building Glendale, California, compound and it’s easy to see why. To enter you must step into a cherry-red English phone booth and pick up the receiver; suddenly a door opens and you’re inside an office that leads to a flotilla of workstations and machine shops. In one room, there’s a full-scale military command center mock-up, in another an immersive, real-time digital-imagery dome that uses 50 projectors to create a crisp, zoomable image of anything from satellite images to 3-D renderings. It’s the kind of place where you trip over a robot on the way to the bathroom."

I bet that's more comfortable, but cost more, than the mobile home these kids built for 10 grand.

I absolutely love this "mini-home" fad that's happening these days, that's a great looking unit and theres tons more out there... get one of those with a solar setup, dig a well and watch your cost of living plummet to almost nothing.

As for the RV, its pretty freakin cool... whats even cooler though is wired.com, they always have interesting finds.

Pretty cool except for the obsessive compulsive behavior of the builder for a little girl. Kind of freaky strange if you ask me.
